City Co. Health Department Won’t Close Campus

Eau Claire County’s health director says she is not going to tell UW-Eau Claire it has to close its doors because of rising coronavirus numbers. City-County Health Director Lieske Giese yesterday said the university will have to decide how to handle the virus on its own. Since August, 203 of UW-Eau Claire’s 10 thousand students have tested positive for the virus. Eighty nine students are currently being quarantined because of the virus.

UWEC Adds Constitution Studies Center

UW-Eau Claire is adding to its Constitutional Studies center. The Menard family yesterday announced a three million-dollar gift to start a five-year program that will focus on the First Amendment. The Constitution Center will also be renamed for the Menard family. UW-Eau Claire officials say the gift will help them provide a better experience and better course of study for students.

More People Getting Back to Work in WI

More people are getting back to work in Wisconsin. The latest numbers from the state’s Department of Workforce Development yesterday show unemployment fell in Wisconsin last month, down to six-point-two percent. That is still twice what the state’s jobless rate was before the coronavirus, but it is less than half the unemployment rate from April.

Seats Empty but Fans Expected

There won’t be any fans inside Lambeau Field this Sunday, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of Packer fans in Green Bay. Police and public health managers yesterday said they will not patrol tailgates or get-togethers in the neighborhoods near Lambeau. They also won’t be patrolling for people wearing masks. Officials in Mosinee are preparing for a visit from President Trump.  The president will be in Marathon County for an event this evening at the Central Wisconsin Airport.  Doors open at 5 p.m. and the president is expected to begin his remarks at 8:00. Vice President Mike Pence is making a return visit to the Badger State.  The White House says the vice president will be in Eau Claire next week to stop by Midwest Manufacturing.  This is the third visit to Wisconsin this

USPS Urges Voters to Cast Early Ballots

 The United States Postal Service is urging voters across Wisconsin to cast their absentee ballot as early as possible.  The deadline to register to vote in Wisconsin is October 14th and now is the time to request an absentee ballot or early voting ballot.  The Postal Service says to ensure on time delivery people need to mail their ballot back at least seven days before the November 3rd general election.

Chippewa County Health Director Angela Weideman says there’s misinformation about a proposed coronavirus ordinance being discussed today, spreading on social media. Weideman says a proposed ordinance does not grant public health officials’ the power to prosecute people for not following through with mitigation strategies. Wildfire Smoke Affecting our Skies

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities says wildfire smoke will stay to the south and west of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin today. They say more smoke moved in from the West last night, making a reddish layer along the western horizon. Highs will be in the 60s today with partly cloudy skies. Pedestrian Killed in Crash

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash with injury and one person unresponsive. A Gibson’s Water Care box truck that was westbound on STH 64 struck a female pedestrian on a curve in the roadway. The pedestrian, 63 year old Christine J Prueher of Greenfield was transported by ambulance to Mayo Bloomer and then by helicopter to Mayo Eau Claire where she underwent surgery and succumbed to her injuries.
