11.11.2020: Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day, a national holiday set aside to honor the armed services past and present.

Veterans Day became a legal holiday in 1938. It was originally known as Armistice Day, and was meant to commemorate the day in 1918 when an armistice went into effect near the end of World War One.  That armistice went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of that year.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, celebrations might look a little different this year.  In our nation’s capital, wreath laying will still take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and other memorials such as the Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial and much more.  The public may not be allowed to gather at these locations without a mask.  Livestreams will be available for those who wish to view from home.

President Trump is set to visit Arlington National Cemetery today, his first scheduled public event of the week.  The President and First Lady Melania Trump will participate in a National Veterans Day Observance at 11 am Eastern Time.

A veterans service dog is being honored with a statue in New York.

A statue of Sully, President George H. W. Bush’s former service dog, is being unveiled at America’s VetDogs in Smithtown yesterday.  The Labrador became a household name after a photo of him guarding the late president’s coffin went viral in 2018.  The statue will feature Sully in a sit position with his leash in his mouth, depicting the retrieve task VetDogs trains their dogs to perform.

To all of our Veterans, and their families, we appreciate, value, and salute you.

Thank you.
