ECPD CLOSER TO SELECTING CHIEF

Two Eau Claire police officers are among the finalists to be the city’s next police chief. Deputy Chief Matt Rokus and Lieutenant Derek Thomas are on the short list, as is Altoona Police Chief Kelly Bakken. All three will sit down for interviews next week. Eau Claire city leaders say they hope to make their choice by the end of next week.

NEW COUNCIL MEMBER STEPS DOWN

A recently-elected member of Eau Claire’s city council is stepping down. At-large Alderman Laura Benjamin resigned yesterday. She said she needs more time to ‘re-prioritize after changes in her life.’ Back in April, Benjamin became the first trans woman to be elected to the Eau Claire’s city council. The council will decide in the next two weeks whether to appoint someone or hold an election to fill her seat.

MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON AFTER ARSON

Attorney General Josh Kaul announced that, Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors obtained long prison sentences for a Sawyer County man convicted of a string of arsons. “The defendant in this case was convicted of 15 counts related to multiple arsons on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation. The lengthy sentence he received reflects how serious his offenses were,” said Attorney General Kaul. “Thanks to the investigators and prosecution team whose work resulted in a conviction on every count charged.” 45

WEATHER CAUSING HEADACHES AND EC TRANSIT DELAYS

The snow is starting to pile up in west-central and northwest Wisconsin.  According to the National Weather Service, about six inches of snow has fallen in northwest Eau Claire with higher amounts to the west and north.  About ten inches has fallen in Bloomer.  A winter weather warning will be in effect in Eau Claire until noon. HERE WE “SNOW” AGAIN…

The hopes for a winter wonderland seemed answer, but the snow hasn’t settled quite yet. The National Weather Service is leaving a winter storm warning in effect through noon today. Forecasters say there will be wind, blowing snow, and maybe even a few more new flakes to start the day. The weather service expects Eau Claire to see as much as 10 inches of snow by the time everything is said and done.

PLAN MOVES AHEAD TO HOUSE HOMELESS IN EC

Eau Claire is taking the next step in building apartments for some of the city’s homeless. T he city council last night okayed a new apartment building at the corner of Birch Street and River Prairie Drive that will have ‘workforce housing’ units and at least eight apartments for homeless people. The apartments would also have shops on the first floor. Construction should start next spring.

Whether it’s butt-dialing or prank calls, Eau Claire County’s 911 managers say they’re getting a lot of false calls this year. The 911 office says they’ve gotten about 32 hundred false calls so far this year. That’s 10 per-day. 911’s Dena Clark says stay on the line if you accidentally call 911, so you can explain the situation. If it’s a prank call, she says stop.

Wisconsin has a new website for the 2020 Census. Governor Tony Evers yesterday launched the WICount 2020 Census website as a tool to get people involved in the census. The governor’s office says the website will have answers to questions and educational information for certain communities in Wisconsin. NORTH CROSSING STOP LEADS TO ARREST AND 6TH OWI

A traffic stop leads to arrest for a 35 year old man. It was just after 5 on Tuesday when Derrick J. Peterson was stopped by a Trooper for speeding on the North Crossing. Upon making contact with Peterson, the Trooper noticed the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Peterson was asked to perform field sobriety tests and clues of impairment were observed. STEVENS POINT MAN FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER

Today, Portage County Judge Thomas B. Eagon sentenced Jason P. Sypher of Stevens Point, Wis. to life in prison. In October, a jury in Portage County found Sypher guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and of hiding a corpse. In March 2017, Sypher’s wife Krista disappeared and has never been found.
