CITY OF CLEAR WATER GOES FOR CLEAN ENERGY

The city of Eau Claire has just over 30 years to change how it powers the city. Eau Claire’s city manager yesterday signed a pledge to make the city carbon-free by 2050. Right now, about 25-percent of Eau Claire’s energy comes from green sources. Part of the carbon-free pledge also includes switching to electric vehicles for the city.

CHIPPEWA CO. TO TACKLE YOUTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Chippewa County is getting some federal money to help young people say ‘No.’ The county yesterday announced a 625-thousand-dollar grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The money is earmarked for youth substance abuse prevention. Public Health Director Angela Weideman says the hope is to get young people to see that drinking and drugs are real problems in the Chippewa Valley.

WI POLITICAL STATIC CONTINUES

Wisconsin’s special session on guns came and went exactly as Republicans in Madison said it would. Both the state Senate and Assembly yesterday quickly gaveled-in and gaveled-out of the special session. They didn’t vote on the red flag law or background check measure that Governor Evers wants to see. The governor blasted Republicans for playing politics. But Republican leaders say it’s the governor who is playing politics by demanding a vote on laws that he knows don’t have enough support.

EVERS CALLS SPECIAL SESSION FOR GUN REFORM

Governor Tony Evers is calling out Republican leaders for their refusal to take up gun reform.  Evers called a special legislative session for today asking for action on gun reform, but the GOP leadership has made it clear it isn’t taking up the issue despite the two proposals being supported by 80-percent of Wisconsinites.  The proposals require universal background checks for all firearm purchases.  It would also establish an Extreme Risk Protection order to enable family members or police to temporarily

WAUSAU POLICE WARN OF BAD CANDY

A social media post is getting the attention of the Wausau Police.  The department shared the post on Facebook referencing a needle reportedly found in a child’s piece of Halloween candy.  Authorities urge parents to check everything kids have received for Halloween.  The person posting the information has filed a complaint with police who are conducting an investigation.

TIS’ THE SEASON

The Salvation Army is putting out the call for bell ringers this holiday season.  The annual Red Kettle campaign kicks off in Dane County tomorrow and runs through Christmas Eve.  The bell ringers are volunteers and the Salvation Army says it needs about 23-thousand-hours filled and they’ve reached 35-hundred hours.  The money raised stays in Dane County and helps shelters, after school programs, disaster relief and provides holiday meals and gifts.

EVERS TO DECIDE FATE OF PROTESTERS

Governor Tony Evers will decide if protesters can be arrested for trying to block oil and gas pipelines in the state. The Wisconsin Senate on Tuesday approved a plan that would add pipelines, as well as other oil and gas facilities to the state law that bans protesters from power plants. The ACLU of Wisconsin is railing against the idea. The ACLU says the law is clearly aimed at environmental protesters.
