Judge Rules On Guidelines for Hearing

Some of the evidence in Lily Peters’ murder is being excluded from next month’s hearing on whether the case will go to adult court. A judge yesterday said prosecutors cannot show pictures of Peters’ autopsy or the crime scene at the hearing. The judge also banned prosecutors from talking about Peters’ character or her personal history. Shabusiness Sentenced, Prison Not Hospital

It’s prison, not a mental hospital, for Taylor Schabusiness. A jury in Green Bay yesterday found Schabusiness competent, and said she knew what she was doing when she killed her boyfriend last year during a day of drug use, then chopped up his body. Her lawyers argued Schabusiness is bipolar, and blacked-out during the crime. Doctors for the prosecution, however, said some of Schabusiness’ symptoms were likely drug-related. A judge will sentence Schabusiness in September.

PFAS Settlement Sees Political Backlash

Wisconsin’s governor says the 10-billion-dollar settlement from 3-M over PFAS contamination isn’t enough. Both Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul yesterday said the offer from 3-M may do more harm than good. WI Elections Education Series Wins Award

Wisconsin Elections Commission says its voter education program won an award. The Commission yesterday said the National Association of State Election Directors named Wisconsin’s Elections 101 program as the winner of its Innovator Award. Elections 101 is a four-part video series that explains the inner-workings of elections in Wisconsin. The Commission launched the video series in an attempt to answer some of the questions and criticisms of the 2020 election here in the state.

Every Vehicle Act Addresses AM Radio

A Senate committee is passing legislation to make AM Radio available for free in the Every Vehicle Act. In a bipartisan vote, the bill received overwhelming support and now moves from the Commerce committee on to the full Senate. The legislation would turn to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make a rule that requires vehicle manufacturers to keep AM broadcast radio without a surcharge.  The president of the National Association of Broadcasters says the legislation would allow AM

Milwaukee Co. Raises Sales Tax

 As expected, Milwaukee County is raising its sales tax. County supervisors yesterday overwhelmingly voted to raise the county’s sales tax by point-four percent. That will nearly double Milwaukee County’s sales tax to just under one-percent. The county got the green light to raise the tax under the new shared revenue proposal from state lawmakers. County Executive David Crowley celebrated the tax hike, saying it will allow the county to continue to pay for parks, seniors services, and buses.

Stillwater Lift Bridge Closed For Repairs

The Stillwater Lift Bridge will be closed throughout the day next Tuesday. The historic bridge spans the St. Croix River at the Wisconsin border, and the closure is to allow for crews to replace an electrical power cable. The bridge will remain in its lowered position, and small boats and watercraft will be allowed to pass underneath it. The closure will last from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.
