RoboCop Connection in Stevens Point

Stevens Point could become RoboCop’s home. Mayor Mike Wiza has been trying to land an 11-foot statue of RoboCop for years. It was supposed to go to Detroit, where the movie was set, but that fell through. Wiza says Stevens Point would be a great home. RoboCop star Peter Weller is from Stevens Point, and the mayor says it would be a fitting tribute.

Lawyers Push for Delay of Trial

Nine jurors are now set to hear the case against former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin.  He’s the one seen on video last year holding George Floyd down until he stopped breathing.  Jury selection began last week with opening statements set for March 29th, but Chauvin’s attorney wants the trial delayed.  He feels news of the recent 27-million-dollar settlement with the Floyd family could impact the jurors already chosen and potential jurors.

WI Coronavirus Picture Continues to Improve

Health officials reported fewer than 300 new COVID-19 cases statewide today.  The 294 new cases pushes the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to just under 570-thousand.  There were no new deaths reported today so that toll remains at 65-hundred-and-36. Spring Clean up Begins at Local Cemeteries

Cemetery staff will begin spring cleanup at the Forest Hill and Lakeview cemeteries today. The city Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department says metal pot holders will be left, but anything plastic will be recycled and ceramic pots will be turned over. There’s no fine for leaving items behind, and clean-up is held twice a year as a courtesy.

Local calls will soon require an area code in Wisconsin. The Federal Communications Commission is creating a new nationwide suicide prevention and mental health help hotline. People will be able to dial 9-8-8 and access the hotline by July next year. The option to call without an area code ends October 23rd.

Jury Selection Continues

The murder trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derrick Chauvin continues today with a sixth day of jury selection.  Half of the jurors have been seated with seven more to be selected soon.  Chauvin is facing second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd.  Meanwhile, the Minneapolis City Council approved a 27-million-dollar settlement for Floyd’s family late last week.
