Madison’s spelling bee champion is ending his national journey just outside the Top 20.  Aiden Wijeyakulasuriya was eliminated yesterday after giving the wrong definition of the word obviate.  He spelled the word properly, but missed the explanation.  He finished the national bee tied for 21st.

Gov. Evers Marks Pride Month

The Pride Flag will fly over the Wisconsin Capitol, once again, starting today. Governor Evers will mark the beginning of Pride Month with a ceremony at the statehouse. That includes raising the Pride Flag. The governor has flown the flag each year of his time in office, and has angered some conservatives by doing so. Today’s ceremony is set for noon.

Chippewa Sheriff Updates Case, Drug Bust

Sheriff Hakes in Chippewa recently updated a case in that area as Brandon Herman received a $50,000 cash bond in Chippewa County Courthouse. Herman appeared in court as part of an investigation that included the seizure of drugs and items listed below: 2.46lbs of Methamphetamine Over 30 grams of fentanyl Over 16lbs of Marijuana Misc. DHS Spending Doesn’t Add Up

An investigation into spending leads to more questions than answers and something still doesn’t add up. Eau Claire County’s Sheriff’s Office released its investigation into DHS yesterday, and the report is full of unanswered questions. The report says DHS employees either lied to investigators or tried to obstruct their investigation.  DHS told investigators it would not provide receipts because accounting for all of the spending would be a HIPPA violation. The sheriff’s office looked into DHS after years of over-spending.

Suspicious Death at WI Campground

Investigators in Richland County are not saying much about last week’s death at a local campground, but they say it was suspicious. The Richland County Sheriff’s Office got a call last Thursday about a man at the Bunker Hill Campground in Cazenovia. He was later pronounced dead, and investigators say the circumstances surrounding his death are suspicious. The M.E. has not yet just how the man died, and there’s no talk of suspects or a possible motive in the case.

Cinder City Issues Partial Water Ban

Altoona has new rules for people who want to water their lawns. The city ordered a partial water ban in order to save water for drinking and fighting fires. People are now only allowed to water their lawns before 8 a.m. or after 7 p.m.. Odd-numbered houses can only water their lawns on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and even-numbered houses get Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. No one is allowed to water their lawns on Sundays. WI Stimulus Money Could Head Back to D.C.

Wisconsin’s governor is getting ready to send back some of the state’s unspent coronavirus stimulus money.  Governor Tony Evers told reporters yesterday that his office is preparing for the claw-back included in the new federal debt ceiling deal.  The governor isn’t saying how much the state will have to return to Washington or where it will come from.  As of the last count in March, Wisconsin has just under 450-million dollars in unallocated stimulus money.  The governor says his agencies are working

Nuisance Animals in Lawmakers Crosshairs

It could soon be a bit easier for Wisconsin’s airports to keep animals away from the runway. Lawmakers in Madison will hold a hearing on a plan today to make changes to the state’s hunting laws that create exemptions for hunting nuisance animals. The changes include allowing shooters to use a light to find animals, and to shoot across the road. The changes would only apply at airports, and only for designated shooters.
