Sex Offender to be Released in Holcombe

Holcombe residents are being notified that a sex offender will be released tomorrow and will live in the community. The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says Roland Staves will live at 26614 County Highway M and has to register for the rest of his life as a sex offender. Bond Set at $1 Million for WI Murder Suspect

Bond is set at one-million dollars for a Columbia County man who is accused of killing his partner.  Police arrested 79-year-old Larry Manthe last Friday in connection with the shooting death of Alice Langer last October.  Investigators believe Manthe killed Langer because she planned to end the long-term relationship they were in.  He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide with domestic abuse and dangerous weapon enhancers.

Farmers in Eau Claire County are dealing with drought conditions as they begin their fall harvest. Moderate to severe droughts are still in the area and farmers are expecting average yields to be  under historical norms. The prices will also be impacted due to the dry weather.

Eau Claire Falls into Seasonal Tourism

Visit Eau Claire officials are expecting the ten-percent increase in tourism from last summer to continue into the fall. Executive director Benny Anderson says they are hoping the ad for fall colors generates interest and says they know people are excited to get the seasonal trips in. The fall colors in the area are expected to peak in the second or third week next month.

Regis Upgrades Unveiled

Regis Catholic Schools has opened its renovated second floor, the first large-scale renovation in the building’s 70-year history. System president Paul Pederson says the work is long-term and he says the building was starting to look “a little tired.” He says students are thrilled with the upgrades. New Proposal Swings For Fences at AmFam Field

700 million dollars proposal would keep the Brewers in Milwaukee until at least 2050. The bill by Wisconsin lawmakers would keep the club at American Family Field using state and local funds. Around 200 million dollars would come from the city and county of Milwaukee, 100 million from the Brewers, and the rest from the state. The proposal would give the team more than 60 million dollars next year and 20 million dollars annually after that through the deal’s end.

UW Madison Ranks High

A new ranking names the University of Wisconsin-Madison as one of the best public and private doctoral institutes in the country. In U.S. News and World Report’s 2024 “Best Colleges” rankings, UW-Madison came 35th, beating out 400 other institutions. It’s also up three spots from last year. Among public universities, Madison is 12th. It’s the university’s highest U.S. News ranking in 15 years.

Traffic Stop Results in Multiple Arrests

On September 15, 2023, at 6:40 pm, a Lake Hallie Police Officer stopped a vehicle for suspended registration, due to unpaid parking tickets, on 22nd Avenue at CTH OO, Lake Hallie. There were three total occupants in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Rebecca Weinberg (30 YOA, homeless), claimed to be the owner of the vehicle. The male subject seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, was identified as Christopher Wurtz (32 YOA, Eau Claire)
