WI Daily Coronavirus County Tops 1,300 Cases

The Wisconsin Department of Health reports more than 13-hundred COVID-19 cases over the last day.  The total number of confirmed positive cases now tops 536-thousand-500.  There were 34 additional deaths confirmed statewide raising the total number of Wisconsin residents killed by coronavirus to nearly five-thousand-800. Wisconsin Business World announced it is launching two statewide business-focused competitions in partnership with Kwik Trip for students in grades 6-12. Students will choose to create a new product for Kwik Trip convenience stores or to solve an intricate supply chain scenario. No Previous Arrests Used in Floyd Trial

No evidence from George Floyd’s previous arrests will be used at the trial involving the four former officers charged in his death.  Attorneys for the officers wanted to include evidence from Floyd’s arrest in 2019, but the judge denied the motion Tuesday.  Derek Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd’s death.  Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane are charged with aiding and abetting.

Attorney’s Seek Separate Trials

The defense attorneys for two men accused in an Eau Claire homicide are seeking a motion for each man to be tried separately. Juan Olivarez and Joe Moya are facing charges of first-degree intentional homicide for the death of Edwin Garcia-Smith on Kappus Drive in March of last year. Both men appeared before a judge yesterday. Pending the motion, both men are due back in court February 9th.  .

Chippewa Co. Vaccine Updates

Chippewa County Public Health will be hosting weekly COVID-19 vaccination clinics for anyone who is eligible to receive the shot, but both clinics this week are full. The department posted to Facebook saying they’re unable to begin making appointments for future clinics until the end of this week. They also say they won’t know about vaccine allocations for next week until Friday afternoon. The department says anyone who makes an appointment before Friday at 2 p.m. will be asked to

Local Co. Plans to Expand

The state of Wisconsin is offering Hewlett Packard Enterprise eight million-dollars to stay and expand in Chippewa Falls. Governor Tony Evers yesterday announced the package for ‘performance based’ incentives. The agreement means HPE can move forward with a 22 million-dollar expansion and upgrade. The governor’s office says that will mean 30 new jobs at the Chippewa Falls office. HPE already employs over 500 people there.

Chase Leads to Charges for EC Woman

Speeding away from the police has landed an Eau Claire woman in jail, and has her looking at a long list of charges. The Wisconsin State Patrol chased down Sara Stephan yesterday on Highway 12/29 near Menomonie early yesterday morning. The trooper originally stopped her for going 90 in a 70, but the chase after the stop hit speeds of 120 miles-per-hour. Troopers say Stephan crashed, then tried to run away. It could be 20 years in prison for the former pharmacist who told police he tried to ruin hundreds of doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Steven Brandenburg agreed to a plea deal with federal prosecutors yesterday. The U.S. Attorney charged Brandenburg with two counts of attempting to tamper with a consumer product.
