Plans for Student Housing Move Up

A new student housing development could be going up on Water Street in Eau Claire. The city Plan Commission voted Monday to approve the plans to rezone the property and create apartment buildings for students. The City Council will make the final call at its meeting next week.

Rapid COVID Antigen Testing Available on Campus

Anyone over the age of five who needs a quick COVID test can get one in Eau Claire today. The county health department says community members who need a rapid COVID antigen test can get one for free at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Zorn Arena on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. It’s open from 4:30-to-8 p.m.

A Chippewa Valley forensic interviewer is receiving thanks from the Eau Claire Police Department. The department posted to Facebook saying Kayla Lauderdale of the Chippewa Valley Child Advocacy Center has completed more than 800-child forensic interviews in the past five-years. The department presented Lauderdale with a letter of appreciation and department coin during an outdoor ceremony yesterday.

Treu Asks to Withdrawal Guilty Pleas

Colten Treu has taken the first step toward possibly going to trial for running down three Lake Hallie Girl Scouts back in 2018. Treu formally asked to withdraw his guilty pleas in the case yesterday. His lawyers say Treu was never told that a guilty plea ended his chance at an appeal. Treu pleaded guilty to killing the girls and one of their mothers back in November of 2018. He is serving a 54-year sentence for the crimes.

Search Continues in Mall Shooting

 Police across northeastern Wisconsin are continuing their search for the young man accused of gunning down one and wounding another at the Fox River Mall over the weekend. Police in Oshkosh yesterday said they found a car they believe is linked to the shooting and arrested 4 people from a house linked to that: No one has found 17-year-old Dezman Ellis, the main suspect in the shooting. Investigators are not offering a motive in the shooting, but say they believe the victim

Trial Moves Ahead for Former Chaplain

The former chaplain at Notre Dame Middle and McDonell Area Catholic High schools is heading to trial on charges he inappropriately touched a former student. A judge yesterday found there is enough evidence against 31-year-old Charles Richmond to head to trial. Police say one former student is accusing Richmond of inappropriate contact.

New Home for Old Favorite

Eau Claire’s old Children’s Museum has a new owner. The museum closed its sale on its former location at 220 South Barstow Street. The museum got a little over a million-dollars for the property, but they were asking for one-point-four-million. Children’s Museum managers say they have a new location for a new museum just down the block. Details about that should be coming in a few weeks.He’s due back in court in March.

WI Coronavirus Cases Continue to Fall

You have to go back to early September to find the last time there were so few new coronavirus positives in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday reported just 750 new positives. That is the lowest count since September 8th. Wisconsin’s seven-day positive-rate is hanging at just over five-percent, down from more than twice that a month ago. Every single age group in the state has seen positive numbers fall-off since the state’s peak in November.
