Looking Local: UW-Stout Unveils New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

 A sustainability project more than two years in the making was unveiled at University of Wisconsin-Stout on June 23, adding to the university’s ongoing commitment to clean energy solutions and green transportation options. Two electric vehicle charging stations, located in Lot 14, on the west side of Sorensen Hall, are now available for campus and community members and visitors. Stanley Library Expansion Underway, Plot Thickens for Gov. Evers Political Future

Health Officials Warn of Tick Born Illness

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is warning residents about a tickborne illness that has recently taken a life.  Officials say three people across the state have been hospitalized with Powassan virus and one of those patients has died.  The virus is spread by the blacklegged tick, a deer tick that also carries Lyme disease and other illnesses.  Experts say Powassan virus infections are rare but Wisconsin did see 12 cases last year, the second-most of any U.S. state.  It

EC City Council Approves Budget Changes

The Eau Claire city council this week approved changes to the 2026 Capital Improvement Plan budget.  Deputy City Manager Dave Solberg says some of their biggest needs include upgrading the wastewater treatment plant and removing and replacing the Gibson Parking Ramp downtown.  He says that project will be done in four steps, and demolition in 2027 is projected to cost three-million-dollars.  City Manager Stephanie Hirsch added homelessness and affordable housing availability also need to be addressed. WI High Court Rules Against Gov. Evers

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is ruling against Governor Evers when is comes to his partial veto related to a 2023 literacy funding bill.  The court ruled that the veto was unconstitutional in a decision issued yesterday.  Evers previously attempted to send the 50-million dollars set aside in the bill directly to the state Department of Instruction instead of allowing the State Assembly’s Joint Finance Committee to distribute the money, as the legislation laid out.  The dollars will go back to

WI Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Reconsider Maps

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is rejecting a bid to reconsider congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.  In Wednesday’s ruling, the liberal-controlled court blocked an attempt to redraw the battleground state’s congressional districts.  This is the second time in two years a Democrat-led movement to change the maps has been rejected by the court.  Republicans currently hold six of Wisconsin’s eight House seats.

Months Long Investigation Leads to EC Men Facing Charges for Child Assault

Two Eau Claire men are facing charges for child sexual assault and are being held on bond.  Prosecutors say 54-year-old James Barbey and 82-year-old Robert Karstensen are both accused of committing sex crimes against multiple victims for several years.  The two men, who were neighbors, are both facing multiple charges including first-degree sexual assault of children under 13-years-old. Budget Back and Forth Continues

Debate over the Wisconsin state budget continues.  If legislators don’t come to an agreement in time, the state will continue operating under the previous budget.  Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate and Assembly have been in budget negotiations with Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who will ultimately approve the budget once it passes through the legislature.  A Joint Finance Committee executive session was canceled last Thursday, minutes before it was set to start.  The deadline is next Monday.

Former Polk Co. Doctor Charged with Child Enticement

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Polk County District Attorney Jeffrey Kemp today announced that Kenneth GaleWyrick, a former Polk County doctor, has been charged with multiple counts of child enticement allegedly occurring between 1995 and 2003 in Polk County. GaleWyrick was arrested on Wednesday at his residence in Polson, Mont. GaleWyrick faces three counts of child enticement.
