Court Rules Coronavirus Not a “Business Interruption”

The coronavirus doesn’t count as a ‘business interruption.’

The Wisconsin Supreme Court unanimously ruled yesterday that 17 businesses in the state cannot collect insurance payouts because of their coronavirus-related losses. The ruling reversed a decision from a Milwaukee County judge. The businesses said the virus forced them to close and cost them customers and profits. Their insurance company, Society Insurance, said their policies didn’t cover coronavirus losses.

The court said ‘business interruption’ usually means something like a fire that destroys a business, not a virus that simply closes the doors.
