NO IF’S, AND’S, OR “BUTT’S”

It was ten-years-ago the smoke free air law went into effect.

The law prohibited smoking in all workplaces, bars, and restaurants and removed tabletop ashtrays. Since the law was enacted, the smoking rate among high school students dropped from almost 22-percent to just under five-percent, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Health officials say there’s still more work to be done and it’s a good idea to quit, no matter your age.

Smoking and vaping could increase the chances of contracting COVID-19. Chippewa County Health Director Angela Weideman said research shows that smokers experience more severe symptoms. Weideman said smoking or vaping decreases lung capacity, and the coronavirus attacks your lungs. She’s also encouraging parents to talk to their kids about smoking and vaping because the pandemic has been stressful for many.
