On Thursday, August 11, 2022, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department arrested Duane Wisner, 58 of Cameron, for Possession of Child Pornography after a several month investigation with the Department of Criminal Investigation. On August 12, 2022 , Wisner was charged in Barron County Court with Possession of Child Pornography and given a $5000.00 signature bond and released with the condition that he not use the internet unless at work for work. Waukesha Co. Deer Farm Depopulated After CWD

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) confirms that a Waukesha County deer farm that tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) earlier this year has been depopulated. Of the 20 animals depopulated, eight tested positive for the disease. In February, DATCP immediately quarantined the farm when two 3-year-old white-tailed bucks tested positive for CWD. Gavel Drops: Prison Time, Apology Letter Ordered For Deadly Buggy Crash

It’s four years in prison for the man who killed a mother of nine in a horse-and-buggy crash in Taylor County. A judge yesterday sentenced Skyler Opelt to prison, and ordered him to write an apology letter. Police say he smashed into the back of the buggy being driven by Anna Borntreger last November. Dane Co. Deputy Charged After Faking Attack

There are now criminal charges against the former Dane County deputy accused of faking an attack last year. Prosecutors yesterday charged Sarah Bortz-Rodriguez with resisting and obstructing officers following the fake attack in Festge Park. She originally told investigators that a masked man attacked her in the park, and slashed her arm. Dash cam video shows Bortz-Rodriguez cut herself and was never attacked. She was fired last year. She’s free on a signature bond until her next court date.

Referendum Set, Plans Include Multiple School Upgrades

 Eau Claire Schools are asking taxpayers for nearly 100 million-dollars this fall. The city’s school board last night approved a 98 million-dollar referendum question. The plan is to renovate and upgrade Memorial and North High Schools, South Middle, and Putnam Heights Elementary School. There are also plans to add on to fields at several schools as well. School Board president Tim Nordin says people will need to pay more to continue to have the schools they want in Eau Claire.

Chicago Court Rules WI Can’t Tax Tribal Lands

A federal court says Wisconsin cannot tax tribal lands without the okay from Congress. The appeals court in Chicago issued the ruling yesterday. It backs three bands of the Chippewa in northern Wisconsin. The state tried to impose property taxes on the land back in 2018 because the tribes sold the land to non-tribal members, then bought it back. The tribes say the land is tax-free under the terms of a treaty from 1854.

Free Tuition Offered to WI Students

The UW System is offering free tuition to some students at three regional campuses. The university yesterday announced the Wisconsin Tuition Promise program. The idea is to offer ‘last dollar’ financial aid for kids from moderate and low income families. The program covers costs at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Whitewater, and UW-Parkside. The idea is to get students a degree without any tuition or fees. Families have to make less than 67 thousand-dollars a-year to qualify. The first round of students will see some help

The bad blood over the investigation into the 2020 election in Wisconsin isn’t going away. State Rep. Janel Brandtjen yesterday asked when Assembly Speaker Robin Vos will be as tough on the Wisconsin Elections Commission as he was on special elections investigator Michael Gableman. Vos fired Gabelman on Friday. Brandtjen said Vos has not called for the Elections Commission to be disbanded despite what she calls a history of lawlessness. Two kids, Axel Wenzel, of Brillion, and Emmitt Bailey, of Menomonie, are among the 25 youngsters competing for the best Kentucky Waterfall in the country.
