The top Airbnb host in Wisconsin is the man behind the Shed in Sturgeon Bay. Airbnb yesterday named Glen Vander Velden as the number-one host in the Badger State. Vander Velden’s home, the Quiet Country Shed, has 250 five-star reviews. Vander Velden gives his wife most of the credit, saying she’s a perfectionist and wants to make sure people have a wonderful experience at the Shed. Lightening Strikes Truck

The owner of the pickup truck hit by lightning in Slinger will have a story to tell! The Slinger Fire Department says a bolt of lightning struck Chad Baumgartner’s truck about 8 a.m. yesterday morning as a round of storms was moving through. Baumgartner says the lightning melted his dash and blew a hole in his windshield. He says the truck is likely a total loss, but said he’s more amazed at what happened than he is angry.

Crime Rates See New Lows in WI City

Janesville is seeing its least violent crime in the last ten years.  Since 2021 police say robberies are down 23 percent, aggravated assaults are down 24 percent, and forcable rapes are down 26 percent.  There was also only one homicide in Janesville in 2022.  The last time crime rates were this low was before 2013.

Dunn Co. Approves ATV/UTV Use on More Roads

Riders of all terrain and utility terrain vehicles in Dunn County now have additional roads to ride after the County Board decided to allow ATV and UTV vehicles on the majority of county highways.  Dustin Binder, county highway commissioner, said the County Board approval of an amended vehicles and traffic ordinance means riders can now use some 400 miles of county highways with their ATVs and UTVs. Remembering Deputy Leising

The sheriff in St. Croix County wants to raise more than half-a-million dollars to remember one of his fallen deputies.  The sheriff’s office yesterday said it wants to raise 600-thousand dollars to build a memorial for Deputy Kaitie Leising, help her family go to the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony in Washington, D.C. next year, and to provide emotional wellness training for local law enforcement.  Leising was shot to death while on the job in May.  The medical examiner in Green Bay says there is no way Taylor Schabusiness accidentally killed and cut-up her boyfriend. The M.E. testified yesterday that it would have taken Schabusiness hours. Schabusiness is on trial for murder. The M.E. yesterday said the victim was strangled before being dismembered, and said while the two had been smoking meth, the drugs didn’t kill him. WI Marine Among Dead in North Carolina

 A young Madison man is among the three Marines found dead in North Carolina. The Pentagon yesterday said 19-year-old Lance Corporal Tanner Kaltenberg was found dead in a car off base with two other Marines Sunday morning. There’s no word on just how the three died, though investigators say there’s no threat to the Marine community there. Kaltenberg joined the Marines back in 2021. He was assigned to the 2nd Marine Logistics Group out of Camp Lejeune.

Owning a car in Eau Claire just got more expensive.  The city council last night okayed a 24-dollar wheel tax.  The money the tax will raise is being earmarked for road repairs.  Some folks in Eau Claire spoke against the tax and are unhappy with the addition, which will be added to the cost of registering your license plates if you live in Eau Claire.
