UW-Madison Sets Protest Guidelines

UW-Madison is making it clear what will, and what will not be accepted as part of any on-campus protests. The school on issued a new set of guidelines for protests. The rules come after weeks of anti-Israeli protests on college campuses across the country. UW-Madison will allow protests as long as they don’t break school rules, threaten, injure, or intimidate anyone. Signs, t-shirts, and even chants will be allowed in most cases.

Fallen Firefighters Honored

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 43rd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend (Memorial Weekend) on May 4-5, 2024 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year’s national tribute will honor 89 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2023 and 137 firefighters who died in previous years. The honorees will include the following Wisconsin firefighters: Fire Chief Raymond “Ray” Samson, age 55, of the Dale Fire and Rescue, died 01/22/2022 due to the complications of COVID-19 Firefighter Frank Sanchez Jr., age 61,

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Elderly and disabled residents in La Crosse are getting help with their yard work, thanks to an annual tradition. The 28th annual “Neighbors Day” took place on Saturday as volunteers, including La Crosse Mayor Mitch Reynolds, helped neighbors get their yards ready for spring. Organizers said around 400 volunteers worked on “about 200 projects in the community.” The event first began in 1996.

Crews Respond to North Side Fire

A fire on Monroe Street caused about $20,000 in damages. The Eau Claire Fire Department responded to a structure fire Saturday evening on the North side. The initial dispatch reported a fire in the garage of a residence and the occupants were advised to evacuate. Truck 8 was the first arriving apparatus and found smoke and fire coming from the garage. They quickly deployed a fire attack hose line and extinguished the fire. Later arriving crews performed searches and ventilation

WI Middle Schooler Being Called a Hero

A Wisconsin eighth-grader is being called a hero for taking charge when his school bus driver fainted behind the wheel.  The Glendale-River Hills school district says Acie Holland saw his bus driver lose consciousness during the ride to school earlier this week.  Police say the bus was starting to veer into on-coming traffic, but Holland jumped up, got the driver’s foot off the gas pedal and then applied the brake.  The eighth-grader then called 911 and assured the younger kids

Prison Time, Probation For FL Man Connected to Chippewa Co. Crimes

A Florida man will spend the next four years behind bars in connection with child sex crimes in Chippewa County in 2021. A judge pronounced sentence on Friday for Frank Facasse, who had pleaded no contest as part of a plea deal last week. Facasse was originally charged with sexually assaulting an eleven-year-old girl, as well as showing pornographic videos to her and two other children. Facasse will also spend eight years on probation following his prison sentence.

Man Sentenced in Case of Police Standoff, Stabbing

A man from Eau Claire County will spend nine years in prison for stabbing his neighbor and holding a standoff with police. Adam Langiewicz pleaded no contest to his charges in exchange for reducing a charge of attempted homicide. Prosecutors say he stabbed his neighbor in Boyd before returning to his home and participating in a four hour standoff, before he set his house on fire. The judge believes drugs and alcohol were factors in the crime.

Hotline Nears 300 Calls

Wisconsin’s clergy and faith leader abuse hotline has received almost 275 calls since it was launched three years ago. Attorney General Josh Kaul says people who previously reported to law enforcement or religious authorities were able to get more help with their cases through the tip line. Tips have resulted in the arrests of several religious leaders. Kaul says victims are encouraged to report either online or by phone.

Tagged Sturgeon Makes Record Trip

A sturgeon tagged in Wisconsin has made a record-breaking swim. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the fish initially tagged in the Chippewa Valley was found by the Missouri DNR in Illinois along the Mississippi. The sturgeon traveled more than 650 miles, the longest known distance a Chippewa Valley lake sturgeon has traveled. The DNR says lake sturgeon are rare on the Mississippi, but live long lives. The oldest in the state was 152 years old.
