DOWNTOWN UNVEILS NEW AREA

Haymarket Plaza is now open in downtown Eau Claire.  The city hosted a ribbon cutting yesterday to unveil the newly designed plaza, which connects the Pablo Center and the Haymarket Landing Development.  The new plaza has green space, seating, water fountains and a bridge that leads to Phoenix Park.  The nearly two-million-dollar project was slated to be finished last November, but cold temperatures halted construction.

LACROSSE PROGRAMS SUPPORT WOMAN

The Women’s Fund of Greater La Crosse is giving out more than 60-thousand-dollars in grants to local programs that help support women and girls.  A record number of applications were received this year.  A total of 27 organizations will receive grant money.

ALEX TWAIT FOUND SAFE Authorities in Eau Claire say they will continue their search for a missing autistic man who walked away from his group home.  Eau Claire police and the county sheriff both say 22-year-old Alex Twait could be in danger.  He is completely non-verbal and has special needs.  Twait walked away from his group home yesterday evening.  Both the PD and the sheriff’s office says they are using planes and officers to search.  Authorities are asking volunteers not

UPDATES IN DEATH OF VOLK FIELD WORKER

The Wisconsin National Guard says the worker who died at Volk Field likely was electrocuted.  The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs yesterday said that 40-year-old maintenance specialist Nicholas Janz died while installing runway light bulbs.  A spokesman for the agency says Janz touched a live electrical source.  A formal cause of death will come once Janz’s autopsy is complete.

CITY HALL CONSTRUCTION NEARING FINISH LINE

City workers in Eau Claire hope to be back at work without construction soon.  The city yesterday said the renovation work on City Hall is almost complete.  Planners hope to wrap-up their nearly year-long overhaul by the end of August.

LACROSSE TAPS INTO CURBSIDE ALCOHOL PICK UP

Shoppers in La Crosse are a step closer to being able to pick-up beer and wine with their groceries at the curb, but there will be some strings. La Crosse’s Judiciary and Administration Committee last night approved the ordinance to allow for curbside alcohol pick-up.  The rules require shoppers to order their drinks four hours in advance, and La Crosse says stores can’t offer curbside delivery after 6 p.m.  So people who order groceries after 2 p.m. will have to

HOW SNOWY WAS IT?

….IT WAS SOOOO SNOWY we set a record! The National Weather Service is confirming what folks in Eau Claire have known for months, the winter of 2018-2019 was the snowiest ever.  The Weather Service yesterday made it official yesterday.  Forecasters say Eau Claire saw 98-point-eight inches of snow this past winter.  That topped the old record of 89-point-three inches set back in 1996-1997.

GREEN LIGHT TO SPLASH AT LOCAL BEACHES

The Eau Claire County Parks & Forest Department announces that water testing results by the City County Health Department indicate that Coon Fork Lake Dayside Beach water is now within acceptable health standards and is therefore now open for swimming. All public beaches on Eau Claire County land are within acceptable standards and are therefore open.

MAN WALKS FREE AFTER 24 YEARS OF LIFE SENTENCE

One of the Monfils 6 is now a free man.  Seventy-two-year-old Rey Moore walked out of the John Burke Correctional Center in Waupin this morning.  He served 24 years of a life sentence for the killing of Tom Monfils at the James River paper mill in Green Bay in 1992.  Five others were charged with murder.  Prosecutors say the men conspired to kill Monfils after Monfils heard one of them talk about stealing from the mill.

Make plans now to protect your pets from fireworks.  Many people enjoy Fourth of July festivities, but for animals, it’s frightening.  Animal care officials in Wisconsin offer some tips to reduce pet anxiety, including turning on the TV or radio to help drown out noise and putting them in their carriers to make them feel more secure.  Some outward symptoms of anxiety in a dog or a cat include pacing, hiding, panting and not leaving your side.
