“WHEEL” SEE OF LACROSSE ADDS TAX

WHEEL see if LaCrosse follows other counties in our state as they are considering implementing an annual wheel tax. Mayor Tim Kabat says it’s the only way to continue funding road repairs and has introduced legislation for the tax for city residents. He says the city has run out of its rainy day fund, can’t raise sales taxes, and doesn’t want to raise property taxes. The proposal calls for a 25-dollar wheel tax per registered vehicle every year. A GRAND SIGHT IN DOWNTOWN EC

The Grand Avenue Bridge is nearly completed and ready for you to lace up and take a walk across. It will open today in time for the 5th annual Grand Evening on the Bridge. Downtown Eau Claire is hosting a dinner on the newly renovated bridge. The new bridge is two feet wider than it was before. Construction is still wrapping up on the east end, so people are asked to enter from the west side on Grand Avenue.

STATE OF EMERGENCY FALLS ON MADISON

Torrential rain is prompting a State of Emergency to be declared around Madison.  The National Weather Service estimates as much as a foot or more of rain has fallen over the early part of the week in Dane County.  Some evacuations have been carried out west of Madison.  The state of emergency will allow the county to receive state and federal disaster aid.

DUNN COUNTY HIT AND RUN

Police are searching for the person responsible for backing into a convenience store in Dunn County.  Elk Mound Police say the hit-and-run happened at the Travel Stop on Highway 12 last month.  The suspect hit the building with his truck, then got out to survey the damage before heading in the store to make a purchase and then driving off.  Damage is estimated at nearly 900-dollars.

UPDATE ON LAKE WISSOTA RESCUE OPERATION

We now know names of those involved in the deadly boating accident on Lake Wissota over the weekend. On Saturday, a pontoon was found near the damn, up against the shoreline south of the Rod and Gun boat landing.  Crews searched the area and found the body of a 50-year-old Travis Cramer from Minnesota. 22-year-old Antonio Robinson of Minneapolis is still missing.

EAU CLAIRE SCHOOL BOARD CRUNCHES NUMBERS

Get out the calculators and legal pads…it’s time to carry the numbers and The Eau Claire School Board is reviewing the budget for 2018-2019.  Members discussed requests made and ways to eliminate a budget deficit.  The district says it has around 140 million dollars to operate on and requests to go nearly six million dollars over that amount.  Some of the requests include purchasing new musical instruments, equipment for the buildings and grounds department, and upgraded technology.

Never too early to start thinking about the cameo and blaze orange…right, hunters?! The state DNR and Conservation Congress are in our area discussing chronic wasting disease.  A public meeting was held yesterday at the Rock Creek Town Hall in Rock Falls.  The meeting follows a positive test for CWD in March on a wild deer.  The Chippewa Valley CWD Advisory team is recommending that DNR staff work with willing landowners to acquire tissue samples for analysis.  The team says

BANK TELLERS TOLD TO WATCH FOR SENIOR SCAMS

Attorney General Brad Schimel says bank tellers play an important role in protecting seniors from scams.  The state recently released a training video that teaches bank tellers how do identify an older person being caught up in a scam by strangers or by someone they know.  Schimel says financial abuse of seniors is up about 18-percent this year.  The tellers are being trained to look out for abnormalities or changes in behavior of a customer and to report those red

It’s not a shot glass on campus getting attention.  UW-Madison is being urged to require the vaccine for meningitis-B. Immunization groups and the mother of a student who died from bacterial meningitis made the push in a letter sent to the school this month, noting two other Big Ten campuses, Indiana University and Purdue University, require it.
