STUDENTS HELD IN CLASSROOM DURING DRUG SEARCH

Students were placed on hold during a drug search today at Memorial High School. A search was conducted for illegal drugs with school administrators and local law enforcement. During this time, all students were placed on hold in their classroom. The search usually takes about 50 minutes. All parents and guardians were notified via email that a search was occurring.

MORE PORCH PIRATES STRIKE LOCALLY

More porch pirate crimes are reported in Eau Claire.  Police say three crimes were reported Monday on the west and south sides of the city.  Police say packages from a case last week have been found but the packages from Monday’s crimes are still gone.

WI IMPEACHMENT VOTE LIKELY

The impeachment vote from Wisconsin is pretty much a done deal. Democrats Mark Pocan and Gwen Moore have been pushing for impeachment for months. Republicans Jim Sensenbrenner, Glenn Grothman, Mike Gallagher, and Bryan Steil are all against the idea. But western Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind has yet to say how he’ll vote. The president won Kind’s district back in 2016, but he has been critical of President Trump since then. A vote on impeachment should come today.

CAMPUS INCIDENT ENDS SAFELY

An incident ends safely after some alarm from students on campus in Marshfield. It was Thursday, December 17th just before 5 in the afternoon when Marshfield Police were dispatched to a man with a gun at UW Stevens Point – Marshfield Campus. Two students reported a disoriented male with what appeared to be a handgun in his jacket pocket. The man was wearing a green stocking cap and appeared lost looking for a staircase. YMCA IS O-U-T

The YMCA is no longer part of the Sonnentag Center project. The Y yesterday said it is pulling out of the joint partnership with UW-Eau Claire and Mayo Clinic Health System to build a new fitness complex. The Y’s Theresa Hillis says they will not agree to build what they cannot pay for. UW Eau Claire and Mayo leaders say they will have to redesign the Sonnentag without the Y. That work will begin immediately.

COLFAX WOMAN INJURED IN TRAIN ACCIDENT

Deputies in Dunn County don’t know what happened just before a train hit a woman’s pickup truck yesterday. It happened in a rural part of the county. The sheriff’s office says the pickup driver is from Colfax, the Canadian National Train hit her truck yesterday morning. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. No one else was injured.

EC COUNTY BOARD FILLS SEAT

Eau Claire County’s open board seat is now full. The county last night named Katherine Schneider to the open seat for District 22. Schneider is a retired clinical psychologist. She is also blind and currently heads Eau Claire’s aging and disability services council.

Firefighters in Eau Claire want you to add the fire hydrant to your shoveling list this winter. The Eau Claire Fire Department yesterday reminded people that shoveling the snow away from hydrants will make it easier for them to get to the hydrant in case of an emergency.

“T” IS FOR TAXES

Property taxes for Wisconsin school districts are up by the highest rate in the country.  A report by Wisconsin Policy Forum says school districts have levied over five-point-two-billion dollars in property tax bills sent this month, an increase of about four-and-a-half percent from last year.  Reports say that’s the largest increase since 2009.

NO RAISE FOR STATE TROOPERS

It looks like raises for state troopers in Wisconsin are dead, at least for now. A proposed four-percent pay-bump for current troopers, and a 23-percent raise for new troopers is not part of a package that lawmakers are set to vote on today. Republican Senate President Roger Roth says lawmakers want more time to look at the long-term costs. He says there could be a vote at a later date.
