WI CORONAVIRUS CLIFF NOTES: 2nd CASE CONFIRMED, OSCEOLA SCHOOLS CLOSED, UW HALTS TRAVEL

Wisconsin has a second confirmed case of the coronavirus. Doctors yesterday confirmed that a person in Pierce County in western Wisconsin tested positive for the virus. The state’s Department of Health Services said the person got sick while traveling in the United States. The state also said that 36 people in Wisconsin have tested negative for the coronavirus. SENTENCING PLANNED FOR TREU

The man who admitted to running down three Girl Scouts back in 2018 will learn his fate today. Colten Treu’s sentencing is set to begin at 9 a.m this morning in Chippewa Falls. Treu pleaded no contest to charges that he was high when he ran down the scouts from Lake Hallie in November of 2018. He also killed one of the girl’s mother. Treu is looking at a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.

CHIPPEWA CO. RULES AGAINST SEX OFFENDER PLACEMENT

A convicted sex offender from Kenosha will have to find a new place to stay. A Chippewa County judge yesterday ruled that prison officials cannot send convicted sex offender Jeffrey Neubecker to the small town of New Auburn. Wisconsin law requires sex offenders to be released to their home county, or the county where the crime occurred. DECISION MADE: DUNN AND JACKSON TO ADD NEW JUDGES

Two of Wisconsin’s new judges are coming to western Wisconsin. The state’s director of courts yesterday said two of the 12 new judges created by a new state law will be coming to Dunn and Jackson counties. Two others will be going to Marathon and Calumet counties. Governor Evers said the new judges will be assigned based on need. Eau Claire County has requested a new judge as well. DNC SEEKS INTERNS

The Democratic National Convention is looking for college interns to come to Milwaukee this summer. The DNC yesterday posted openings for paid internships. Interns will get 15 dollars-an-hour and maybe class credit to help work on the convention that is coming to Milwaukee in July. The deadline to apply is March 27th. OSHKOSH CO. AWARDED CONTRACT EXTENSION

Oshkosh Defense is not getting out of the military truck business anytime soon. The company yesterday said it’s been awarded a 25-million-dollar contract extension. Oshkosh builds several vehicles for the U.S. military. Governor Tony Evers last week authorized the state to sue the Trump Administration over plans to shift money from the Pentagon to the border wall in part because of fears that shift would take money away from Oshkosh.

SECURITY UPGRADES PLANNED FOR MARSHFIELD CAMPUS

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Marshfield is one step closer to implementing an upgraded security plan.  Officials today say the main campus will pick up nearly 43-thousand-dollars to buy and install 32 new security cameras around the Marshfield campus.  An incident in December when a visitor with a pair of gloves was mistaken for a man with a handgun prompted the decision to upgrade the quality and the quantity of the cameras.  The school is awaiting approval of 67-hundred-dollar in

MARCH GETS SWEETER IN WI

Governor Tony Evers is declaring Maple Syrup Month in Wisconsin.  The governor today said he and the state’s first lady were at InTheWoods Sugar Bush in Manitowoc County this weekend for the first maple tree tapping of the season.  He has declared March 15th through April 15th as maple syrup month to honor the state’s maple syrup producers.   Wisconsin ranks third among states in the production of maple syrup.

AIR NATIONAL GUARD FLIGHTS WILL BE HELD

The Air National Guard will try to keep the noise down but they are holding necessary night flights this week.  The Madison-based 115th Fighter Wing has training until about 9 p.m. today through Thursday.  Pilots will follow flight paths designed to minimize noise, but the guard does need training of nighttime flights help personnel readiness.
