VP PENCE CANCELS TRIP

President Trump’s update on the situation along the Syrian-Turkish border means an adjustment in schedule for Vice President Mike Pence.  The vice president cancelled a visit to Marinette this morning to stay in Washington as the President made his announcement of lifting sanctions on Turkey.  In exchange, Turkey agreed to stop fighting Kurdish forces in Syria.  It’s not been announced whether the vice president will reschedule his trip.

A familiar name to local politics was vocal on Capital Hill. Late last night, the House Committee on Ways and Means passed the Elijah E. ALL CLEARED AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL IN ARCADIA

Everyone is okay following a chemical spill in Arcadia.  Police say the spill happened at the Pilgrim’s Pride poultry processing facility on North 3rd Street Tuesday morning.  Police say over 30 people were treated at the scene and about ten were taken to medical centers for further treatment.  They’ve since been released.

NEW CHARGES FILED IN CASE OF MISSING WI BROTHERS

A man connected to the disappearance of two Wisconsin brothers will have new charges filed against him.  KMBC reports Garland Nelson is currently charged with tampering with a vehicle in Caldwell County, Missouri.  Nick and Justin Diemel of Shawano County, Wisconsin were last seen on July 21st.  The Clinton County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office says their vehicle was found in Holt but they haven’t been seen.  A probable causes statement shows Nelson admitted to driving the truck that was rented by the brothers.  Human remains

MISSISSIPPI RIVER CREEPING TO FLOOD LEVELS

The Mississippi River is expected to get above minor flood stage to the north of La Crosse this week.  According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi will get above minor flood stage of 12 feet at Wabasha, Minnesota sometime Friday and level out around 12-and-a-half feet.  The river is also expected to get near minor flood stage in Winona and La Crosse but stay just below it heading into next week.

It’s called gavel and go. The head of the Wisconsin Senate says he’ll call lawmakers into special session next week like Governor Tony Evers ordered, but will immediately end the session. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald yesterday said there’s not enough support for Governor Evers’ proposed red flag law or expanded background checks, so he sees no point in wasting time.

COUNCIL APPROVES RESOLUTION

Eau Claire is trying to make it clear that the city doesn’t like racism. The city council last night unanimously approved a resolution that condemns racism and declares that Eau Claire is a welcoming community. MORE MONEY REQUESTED FOR JUVENILE CENTER

The folks who run the juvenile justice center in Eau Claire are asking for more money. Detention center managers this week asked the county for almost 200- thousand-dollars more. Detention Services Manager Rob Fadness says they need the money to add guards at the center and deal with young offenders who are spending more time behind bars.

KICK THE CABOOSE BACK TO DULUTH

We’re kicking the caboose back to Duluth. Eau Claire is unloading the Soo Line locomotive. City leaders last night voted to see the defunct locomotive back to the Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth. The city bought the train from the same museum last year, but restoration project went off the rails once city leaders realized how expensive it would be. LAWMAKERS HIT “SEND” ON HANDS FREE LAW

You can add Eau Claire’s Democratic state rep. to the list of people who want drivers in Wisconsin to put down their phones. State Rep. Jodi Emerson is one of the co-sponsors of a proposed law that would require drivers in the state to use their phones hands-free. Emerson says it’s a matter of safety. Wisconsin already bans texting while driving, but Emerson wants to take the law one step further.
