Sauk Co. Event Linked to COVID-19 Cases

Health officials say several cases of COVID-19 have been linked to a wedding in one Wisconsin county. The Sauk County Health Department says anyone who attended a wedding there in the last two weeks may have been exposed to the virus and because of the nature of events like this, it’s harder to conduct contact tracing. They’re suggesting a 14-day quarantine for anyone who attended.

Gavel Drops, WI Absentee Ballots Counted on Election Day

The United States Supreme Court is not going to change the rules for counting late absentee ballots in Wisconsin. The court yesterday ruled 5-3 that state lawmakers, not federal judges are the ones who write the election laws in Wisconsin. The decision overturns a Madison-based federal judge who wanted to allow local election managers to count ballots that came-in as late as six days after Election Day. The high court’s ruling means late absentee ballots will not be counted this year.

WI Sees Uptick in Hospitalizations

The number of people in the hospital with the coronavirus in Wisconsin continues to creep-up. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said 13-hundred-50 people are now in the hospital with the virus. Of them, 329 are in the ICU. There are four patients at the state’s overflow hospital at the state fairgrounds in West Allis.

Former School Employee Fined

A woman who once worked in schools in Buffalo County is looking at a 600-plus dollar fine for sending nude pictures to a student. A judge yesterday ordered 34-year-old Heather Treague to pay 643 dollars for sending naked pictures to a 17-year-old student. She also asked for nudes in return. Prosecutors allowed Treague to plead guilty to disorderly conduct instead of sex charges.

Cardinals at Home Nests for Online Classes

Tomorrow is the last day of in-person classes for kids in Chippewa Falls schools. The Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District yesterday told parents they are moving to online-only classes because of the coronavirus. Kids will be in class today and tomorrow, then start virtual classes next Wednesday. Superintendent Jeff Holmes says they hope to return to in-person classes on the last day of November, but he’s not sure the coronavirus numbers will have dropped enough by then. CLICK HERE

Black River Falls Voters Asked for School Boost

Voters in Black River Falls are being asked to raise their taxes for school improvements. The school district is asking voters to approve the second phase of a school improvement referendum. The total cost would be 23 million-dollars. Superintendent Shelly Severson says most of the work will go toward a new boiler, new roofs, and new windows.

UW Plans Furloughs

UW-Madison says the choice is either furloughs or layoffs. Chancellor Rebecca Blank yesterday told 21 thousand university employees that she is choosing to furlough them in order to avoid dramatic cuts. Blank said there will be some cuts at the university, those will be announced in the next few weeks. UW-Madison is trying to recover from a 100 million-dollar-hit last spring because of the coronavirus. Blank says the furloughs will last through the first six months of next year.

Milwaukee Sees Deadliest Year on Record

Milwaukee’s medical examiner yesterday said 2020 is the deadliest year in the city’s history. The M.E. yesterday said two weekend homicides pushed Milwaukee’s total for the year to 174. That is more than the previous deadliest year, which was 1993. The medical examiner says homicides are up 70 percent from last year, and adds that Milwaukee could possibly see 220 killings before the year is over.

Push to Recall Evers Fails

The push to recall Governor Tony Evers has failed. The woman who organized the effort, Misty Polewczynski, said on Facebook yesterday that they don’t have enough signatures to force the governor into a recall election. She needed 670 thousand, she did not say just how many signatures she got. Polewczynski started the push to recall the governor because of how he handled this summer’s violence in Kenosha and how he’s handled the coronavirus for the past several months.
