Event to Benefit The Highground Veterans Memorial Park

This will be a big day for The Highground Veterans Memorial Park at Neillsville, as there will be a capital campaign kickoff event late today at The Condensery in Osseo. The Highground’s leadership is working to raise $4 million, with a new museum and education center, along with upgrades at its Camp Victory facilities planned. There’s no charge for attending the event, which includes food, 5:3-7:30 p.m. Information is available on The Highground’s Web site, and walk-in spaces are available.

Human Trafficking Suspects Arrested

The main suspect in a wide-ranging sex case in Eau Claire is in custody. Eau Claire County deputies yesterday arrested Mark Scoville. He’s wanted on 32 counts of sexual assault and drug charges. A number of women have told police Scoville drugged them, then raped them. Scoville was indicted last month, but was on the run. Local Vaccine Clinic Opens

Eau Claire’s city-county health director says they have hundreds of doses of the coronavirus vaccine to give, starting today. Health director Lieske Giese says the mass vaccine clinic at UW-Eau Claire’s Zorn Arena opens today. It is open tomorrow and Saturday as well. Anyone 16 and up is welcome to get a vaccine, although it’s important to note that certain vaccines are authorized for 18+ only and health care professionals can assist you in that decision. Barron Co. School Scraps Mask Requirement

Students and teachers in one Barron County school are no longer required to wear masks at school. The school board in Cameron this week voted to end their mask requirement. The district’s Joe Leschisin says they are going to allow parents to make the decision if their kids will wear a mask. Barron County health officials say they fear the decision could lead to a new outbreak in the county.

In the end, Governor Tony Evers is going to spend Wisconsin’s billions in federal stimulus money how he wants. But Republicans at the state capitol are promising to try and change his mind. Republicans yesterday began approving nearly a dozen plans they say would spend the money more fairly, and give taxpayers in the state some say over where the money goes. Report cards from UW-Madison this spring may have a lot fewer letter grades. The school yesterday said students have the option to get pass/fail grades instead. The school says many students are stressed-out, and feeling a burn-out as they head toward finals. UW-Madison offered the same option to students last spring.

Fewer Federal FoodShare Dollars

The end of Governor Ever’s emergency means Wisconsin will see fewer food stamp dollars from Washington, D.C. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said Wisconsin will lose 50-million-dollars a month in emergency supplemental FoodShare benefits. Those extra benefits are only available to states under a coronavirus emergency. Republican lawmakers say they tried to pass a law earlier this year that would have kept the state eligible for the money, but Governor Evers shot that plan down.

Poll Shows Support for Criminal Justice Reform

A new poll says most people in Wisconsin support criminal justice reform. The Badger Institute yesterday released the poll results showing nearly three-quarters of voters in the state want prisons to focus on preparing inmates for life after their sentence. The poll shows strong support for helping inmates get job skills and keeping ex-cons away from committing new crimes. The Badger Institute has pushed for criminal justice reform for years, and says the poll is encouraging news.

Human trafficking suspects are now in custody. . In March of this year Mark Scoville was charged with 32 separate offenses following a long-term investigation in the Village of Fairchild. The offenses included human trafficking, false imprisonment, sexual assault, administering a dangerous drug and maintaining a drug trafficking house.
