Building Up the Downtown

Breaking ground on a new apartment complex in Eau Claire is taken care of. The Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce joined Merge Urban Development yesterday for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Andante Apartments downtown. The new apartments are one of many new things coming to downtown this summer.

Welcome Home for Local Vovid-19 Patient

A 61-year-old man hospitalized with COVID-19 since late-January is back home now. H-S-H-S Sacred Heart posted a photo of Steve who was released from their care on his birthday Wednesday. They say he had a stroke from COVID-19 and will continue physical therapy at home.

UWEC Culture Fest Planned

The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire is still holding Culture Fest this weekend, but it’s virtual because of the pandemic. Events start Saturday and there will be some international food dishes to sample in the Davies Center and Marketplace each day of the event. Investigation Underway Into Teachers Comments

No one is saying just what a Chippewa Falls High School teacher said to get him suspended from the classroom. The school district yesterday said the unnamed teacher has been placed on leave because of ‘racist’ and ‘offensive’ comments from two years ago. The district says it just became aware of the teacher’s comments this week. The school district is asking parents for time to complete a formal investigation.

Lawyers Ask for Release

While prosecutors say one of the two young women in the Slender Man stabbing case continues to be a threat, her attorneys say there is no evidence to back that up. Anissa Weier’s lawyers are asking that she be released from the state mental hospital where she’s spent the past seven years. Marijuana Legislation Up in Smoke

Marijuana will not become legal in Wisconsin this year. Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu yesterday said there’s nowhere near enough Republican support to legalize pot. LeMahieu said part of the opposition comes from business owners who worry legal pot will only make the state’s under-employment problem worse. WI Jobless Rate Holds Steady

Wisconsin’s jobless rate hasn’t changed since January. The latest numbers from the Department of Workforce Development show the state’s unemployment rate for March held at three-point-eight-percent. That’s the same it’s been since the beginning of the year. The national unemployment rate last month was six-percent.

Lawsuit Claims Minority Program Discriminates

A new lawsuit says one of Wisconsin’s minority college grant programs discriminates. A Madison couple is suing over the state’s Minority Undergraduate Retention Grant program because they say their biracial son is locked-out. The couple says the program is only open to ‘some’ minorities in the state. The program is for black, Native American, Hispanic, and some Asian students. Students from other countries or nationalities are not allowed to apply.
