Green Bay Bridge Malfunctions

The Department of Transportation continues to investigate the cause of a malfunction of the Mason Street Bridge in Green Bay.  Crews spent much of today trying to raise the bridge, which had been stuck at a 61-degree angle.  A 72-degree angle is considered best for the safe passage of marine traffic.  It could be weeks before the bridge is fixed and drivers are being advised to use the Walnut or Main Street Bridges downtown, the Highway 172 bridge to the

Local Hospital Opens Door to Mental Health Treatment

HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph’s hospitals focus on mental health with a new addition. They recently received $15 million in state funding as part of Governor Tony Evers’ biannual state budget, announced Thursday, July 8. The funding will allow our hospitals to expand capacity by adding 22 new psychiatric beds. The additional beds will enhance the existing units, creating a 33-bed adult unit at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital in EauClaire and a dedicated 18-bed adolescent unit at HSHS St.

WI National Guard to Head to Border

 Some of Wisconsin’s citizen soldiers are heading to the southwest to help along the border with Mexico. The Wisconsin National Guard announced the deployment yesterday. About 125 soldiers from the 229th Engineer Company based in Prairie du Chien and Richland Center will head-out. Commanders say the troops will assist along the southern border for up to a year.

The Cheese Does Not Stand Alone

There’s a lot of love for colby cheese at the Wisconsin Capitol, but there’s also a lot of love for all of Wisconsin’s other cheeses. And that’s the problem. Lawmakers listened to the push to name colby as Wisconsin’s official state cheese yesterday. Colby was first made in Colby, Wisconsin and state Senator Kathy Bernier says it put Wisconsin on the map. But other lawmakers say there are other Wisconsin cheeses that helped make the state America’s dairyland. They say it wouldn’t be fair to single-out just one.

Coronavirus Fading in WI; EC Opens Drive-Thru Vaccine Clinic

It’s the latest snapshot that shows the coronavirus is fading in Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services yesterday said Wisconsin is averaging zero coronavirus deaths per-day. Push for Civilian Oversight Committee Continues

The push for a civilian oversight panel for law enforcement in La Crosse County isn’t going away. The County Executive Committee yesterday approved a resolution asking for a study committee to look at the possibility of creating a new board that would oversee law enforcement agencies. Assistance Aimed at Internet Bills

The state of Wisconsin is going to pay some people’s internet bills. Governor Evers yesterday expanded the state’s Rental Assistance Program to include internet costs. The governor says the coronavirus has proven just how necessary the internet is. To qualify for a state payment, people must have lost their job or lost some hours at work, be in danger of losing their home, and make below no more than 57-thousand-dollars a year for a family of four. WI Not Raising Tuition For Next Year

The University of Wisconsin is not raising tuition for next year. Lawmakers voted to end the university’s eight-year-old tuition freeze last month, but the school says it is not hiking the cost of learning for next year. Governor Evers ordered some more money for the university, which school leaders say helps. UW Regents are set to meet today to approve the system’s new budget. Total costs for UW schools will go-up a bit because of an increase in student fees.
