Public Health Peek: WI Coronavirus Cases Steady

Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalization numbers haven’t changed much. The state’s Hospital Association on Friday said 157 people are in the hospital with the virus. That’s up a few from last Thursday’s report. There continue to be just 26 people in the ICU with the virus. Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalization numbers have remained near 150 for the past week or so. CLICK FOR MORE FROM WI DHS.

Former Badger Assistant Coach Passes Away

Badger fans are mourning the loss of former assistant football coach Gary Brown. He passed away yesterday after several weeks in hospice. He was 52. Brown played college football at Penn State before going to the NFL. He coached running backs while at Wisconsin, but left after the 2021 season. Brown battled cancer twice, including a bout in 2019. His cause of death is not officially known.

Sick Eagle Unable to Be Treated

There’s a sad update to the story of a sick bald eagle found in Bay View. Veterinarians say they had to put the bird down over the weekend. Someone brought the eagle to the Humane Society with what looked to be the bird flu. After treatments, vets say they decided to ease the bird’s suffering. DNR and animal rescuers are now watching to see if the eagle’s partner will stay in Bay View or leave.

New Law Means New Youth Prison in Milwaukee Co.

It is now up to Milwaukee and Milwaukee County leaders to find a new spot for a new youth prison. Governor Evers on Friday signed the law that will close the troubled Lincoln Hills prison in northern Wisconsin and open a new facility in Milwaukee County. The law provides 45 million-dollars for the new prison, but it doesn’t provide any clarity as to where the new facility will be built. Local leaders will have to work that out. Rollover Crash Causes Backups for Miles

WI State Patrol Troopers responded to a rollover crash at milepost 41 just west of Menomonie. A motorhome traveling eastbound lost control and crashed into the median, damaging approximately 100 feet of guardrail. Both eastbound lanes of traffic were closed during the removal and cleanup process. Traffic was able to continue eastbound on the right shoulder, causing a three-mile backup and traffic delays for approximately three hours.

Wisconsin Connection to World Stage

A rally to support Ukraine was held at the state Capitol yesterday.  Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway declared Saturday, April 9th as ‘Solidarity with Ukraine Day,’ and called on Madison residents “to join us in expressing support for the people of Ukraine,” which has been under attack by Russia for six weeks.  Ukraine’s national anthem was played at the outdoor rally, which featured testimonials from Ukrainians who fled the country and came to Wisconsin.

Barron Co. Flock Catches Flu

A poultry flock in northern Wisconsin has caught the contagious bird flu.  State officials said Saturday that a case of the “highly pathogenic avian influenza” has been found in Barron County, and that all birds on the property will have to be euthanized to avoid further spread.  It’s the fourth Wisconsin poultry flock to catch the bird flu.  All poultry shows across Wisconsin have been suspended until May 31st to keep the flu from spreading.

WI Holds Exotic Pet Surrender

Dozens of exotic animals were rounded up Saturday at a pet event in Monona.  The Aldo Leopold Nature Center held an Exotic Pet Surrender Event yesterday, and called on Wisconsinites to turn in their unwanted exotic animals instead of releasing them into the wild.  The organization says it collected 54 animals, including lizards, marsupials and a flying squirrel.  All animals surrendered at the event will be put up for adoption.
