Never Forgotten Honor Flights Return

 Never Forgotten Honor Flights are returning in central Wisconsin this year.  Honor Flight organizers recently posted on Facebook Missions 39 and 40 will take off from Wausau on May 2nd and June 6th.  These will be the first Honor Flights in two years because of  the pandemic.  Honor Flights take veterans to Washington, DC where they can see memorials to wars they and others fought in.

UWEC Foundation Receives Gift to Endow Largest Scholarship in College of Business

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire College of Business has received its largest endowment to date from a lifelong member of the community. The endowment will generate up to $80,000 annually in scholarships. The William “Bill” Bingham Memorial Scholarship Fund, made to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation in memory of Anna K. Bingham, Dr. Roy W. Bingham and William A. Bingham, will provide numerous renewable scholarships to students in UW-Eau Claire’s College of Business. It is the single largest endowment ever established

Baby Formula Recalled

Abbott Laboratories is issuing a voluntary recall for several branded infant powder formulas over bacteria concerns.  The FDA announced the recall is for powder formulas sold under the Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare labels manufactured in Michigan.  The company says there have been four reports of infants exposed to Cronobacter sakazakii after consuming formula made at the Michigan facility.  To find out if you have a product under the recall YOU CAN CLICK HERE.

Former MN Officer Sentenced

Former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter will spend 16 months in prison and eight months on supervised release for killing an unarmed Black man during a traffic stop.  Potter always maintained she shot Daunte Wright by accident when he resisted arrest, mistaking her service weapon for her Taser.  Prosecutors wanted at least seven years.  Potter was convicted of first- and second-degree manslaughter in a trial in December. WI On the World Stage

Wisconsin native Deedra Irwin did not reach the podium in the women’s 12-and-a-half kilometer mass start biathlon.  Irwin crossed the finish line in 43:42.1 to earn 23rd place in the event.  France finished in first to win the gold, followed by a pair of Norwegians that picked up the silver and bronze. On the ice, both Americans that competed in the men’s 1000 meter speed skating final were left off the podium after each athlete finished outside of the top 10.

Fire Causes Damage, No Injuries

Dogs were rescued from a fire in the downtown area. The Eau Claire Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 820 Oxford Avenue. The fire was called in by a passerby who then woke the residents up to evacuate the home. The residents had put most of the fire out before the fire departments arrival. Candidates Announce Run for Chippewa Co. Sheriff

Who’s next? We know who would like to be. One day after Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk announced his retirement, two candidates jumped into the race.  Former Elk Mound police chief Travis Hakes is running as a Republican, while Chris Kowalczyk is running as a Democrat.  Chris Kowalczyk is the sheriff’s brother and an investigator with the sheriff’s office.  The two will face off in November.

New Class of Officers Ready for Work

The latest class of new Milwaukee police officers is ready for the street.  The city welcomed 26 new officers to the force yesterday.  The new class is just the first of what could be several new Milwaukee police officers.  MPD commanders say they hope to hire 200 new officers this year alone.
