Crash in Construction Zone Under Investigation

On Friday June 03, a bit before 8:30 in the morning a crash occurred on I-94 Westbound at mile marker 27 near Wilson. The crash involved injuries. PatrioTIK Tok Star Visits Local Veterans Tribute

St. Paul, MN Navy Veteran Patriotic Kenny of recent Tik Tok fame, will be in our area and taking a tour of the  Chippewa Valley Veterans Tribute.  80 year old Kenny Jary shot to fame on the social media platform Tik Tok, when his scooter broke down and his neighbor helped him make a video to get donations to help replace it.   He has since turned the generosity of strangers into a way of paying it forward and helping other veterans

Upward Bound Program Continues to Move Forward

A $2 million federal grant has been renewed for five years to fund the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Upward Bound program, which aims to prepare first-generation and low-income high school students for college. The U.S. Department of Education grant will provide academic support, study groups, leadership workshops and financial assistance to ninth- to 11th-grade students at Eau Claire North and Memorial high schools. Racine Implements Curfew After Funeral Shooting

Anyone under 18 has to be off the streets of Racine by 11 p.m. this weekend following a shooting at a local funeral. Racine Mayor Cory Mason ordered the curfew yesterday. He said he’s ordered police to ‘actively enforce’ the curfew. The mayor says he’s also reached out to the governor and attorney general for more resources for Racine.

No Trial in Deadly Buggy Crash

There will be no trial for the man accused in a deadly buggy crash in Taylor County.  Skyler Opelt yesterday pleaded no contest to homicide and other charges in the case.  Police say he crashed into the back of the buggy last November, killing a mom and injuring nine of her children.  Oplet told police he snorted drugs right after the crash so he would not be caught with them.  He’ll be sentenced in August.

Sex Offender To Be Released in Eau Claire

There’s a warning about a sex offender to be released in Eau Claire.  Police in the city say 58-year-old Mark Staffa is scheduled to be released from prison next Tuesday.  He will be living at a home in the 100 block of Randall Street, and will be monitored.  Staffa served time in prison for multiple counts of sexual assault.  He will spend the rest of his life on the state’s sex offender registry. Local Development Gets State Attention

 The state is getting involved in the proposed Lowes Creek Park development.  The Department of Administration yesterday said annexing the land into the city of Eau Claire is not in the public interest.  The state says the Town of Washington would be a better fit for the water and sewer needs of the new development.  It’s not clear what the opinion will mean for the land annexation or the plan to build new homes there.

New UW President Aims to Keep Tuition Freeze, Work on Diversity

The new UW president says he’s going to keep the university’s tuition freeze in place. Incoming President Jay O. Rothman yesterday said he’s recommending that undergrad tuition remain flat next year. Tuition for in-state students at the University of Wisconsin has remained the same for the past 15 years or so, mostly because of a lawmaker-imposed tuition freeze at the school. WI Sees Uptick in Coronavirus Hospitalizations

Wisconsin’s coronavirus hospitalization numbers are back over 400. The state’s Hospital Association yesterday said 417 people are now in the hospital with the virus.
