Budget in Billions, Push to Local Level

Budget in Billions, Push to Local Level

The governor’s latest budget proposal would send a half-billion dollars to local governments, and let them raise taxes too.

Governor Evers yesterday said he wants to increase so-called shared revenue to 20 percent of Wisconsin’s sales taxes. That’d be about 575 million-dollars in the new budget. The governor also wants lawmakers to allow counties to raise their local sales taxes. Milwaukee County would be able to add a full percent to its current half-a-percent sales tax. Other counties in Wisconsin could go as high as one percent. Republican lawmakers have been open to the idea of more money for local governments, but they didn’t say anything about the governor’s latest proposal.
