Lawmakers Take on Social Media

There’s a set of plans from some Republican lawmakers that could take social media companies to court for censoring posts online.

State Rep. Shae Sortwell and state Senator Roger Roth yesterday introduced the plans they say will protect people’s First Amendment rights online. One of their plans would allow people to sue if their posts are removed or if they are ‘shadow banned’ from any social media platform. Another would give journalists more freedom to post, and the third would create a ‘penalty structure’ for government officials in the state who try and fight or remove online posts.

The lawmakers say their ideas all push-back on big tech’s growing influence on free speech. It’s unlikely any of the three will ever become law.
