Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Officer Shooting, Killing

The man accused of shooting and killing one Milwaukee police officer and injuring another is pleading not guilty.  Suspect Tremaine Jones entered his plea for charges of first-degree intentional homicide and attempted homicide in court today.  The Milwaukee Police Department says officers Kendall Corder and Christopher McCray responded to reports of a person with a weapon on June 26 when the suspect ambushed them.  Both were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, and Corder succumbed to his injuries several

WI Shifts Social Security Disability Income Rules

Starting next week, Wisconsin people getting Social Security Disability Income will also be eligible for unemployment if they qualify. Previously a state law denied unemployment to someone receiving SSDI.  A judge ruled against the ban and ordered the state to stop denying the unemployment claims, effective July 20th.  The question of whether people can collect back unemployment pay is not decided yet.

New Dairy Building Unveiled, Bring on the Cream Puffs!

The Wisconsin State Fair’s Dairy Building is set to unveil its freshly renovated space.  Formerly the Cream Puff Pavilion, CEO Shari Black says it will open for this year’s fair.  Renovations began after last year’s fair, preserving the original framework.  A new state-of-the-art bakery has been relocated from the east side to the west side to improve flow and capacity, adding ovens, better lighting, and a skylight.  After the fair, it will host weddings and meetings.

Friday Feel Good: Lifeguards Make a Splash in Deer Rescue

Additional Charges Filed In Deadly Hit and Run

Additional charges are being filed against a Menomonie teen already charged in connection with a deadly Dunn County hit and run.  The body of 54-year-old Ann Seidl was found lying in a ditch along County Highway Y on March 29th of this year.  Authorities say that 17-year-old Addison Bowell was the driver of the vehicle that hit Seidl and failed to stop at the scene or contact emergency services.  Bowell had already been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of

Flags Lowered to Honor WI Couple

Flags across the state will be flying at half-staff on Saturday.  Governor Tony Evers says it’s to honor David and Teri Pabst, the Middleton couple shot dead on July 7th by their son James.  Their services are being held the same day.  David served in the Wisconsin State Patrol for over 38 years, and Teri was a special education teacher at an elementary school.

Grant to Focus on Housing Solutions

A program aimed at eliminating homelessness in La Crosse is receiving a financial boost.  The Wisconsin Department of Justice is approving a 350-thousand dollar grant for the Pathways Home initiative.  The initiative’s goal is to achieve Functional Zero homelessness in La Crosse by 2029.  The grant funding would be used in part to cover the cost of additional staffing.

New Art to “C” in Onalaska

Onalaska residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a new art piece next week.  The city and the Onalaska Art Keepers group will unveil a new sculpture on Monday.  The piece, called “Calibration,” is described as a 15-foot tall stylized letter C.  Folks will see the piece standing in a park not far from Highway 35.
