The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) is sending $3.9 million to unclaimed property owners in March, and for many, the delivery of a check will come as a surprise.  DOR annually matches tax records against the state’s unclaimed property roll.  If DOR can definitively match tax records to an owner on the unclaimed property roll, the agency sends out checks automatically for those owed property valued at $2,000 or less and will send letters to those owed property valued at greater

Governor Evers Visits The Valley

 Governor Evers was in Eau Claire yesterday to talk about new buildings at the UW-Eau Claire campus. The governor wants to spend about two billion-dollars on new projects at UW campuses across the state. In Eau Claire that would mean a new science building. The Eau Claire campus has been working to replace Phillips Hall for years, the campus needs 231 million-dollars more to do it. But it’s not clear if the legislature will go along with the governor’s proposal.

UW President Requests Tuition Bump

The University of Wisconsin is asking for its first tuition increase in nearly 10 years. UW President Jay Rothman told lawmakers yesterday that the school would like to raise tuition five percent next fall. Wisconsin froze tuition at UW campuses back in 2013, and only lifted that freeze back in 2021. Cinder City Plans Lake Cleanup

Altoona has the gear to start taking sand out of its lake. A new bed load sediment collector arrived this week. The collector does just what its name suggests, it clears sediment out of the water. All of the gear cost just one dollar because the city of Cleveland couldn’t make it work for them. Altoona says it needs to remove tons of sand from Lake Altoona in order to keep the lake in good shape.

Ghost Students Topic of New Report

There’s a new report that says taxpayers are paying millions of dollars for students who are no longer in Wisconsin’s public schools. The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty released its report on so-called Ghost Students yesterday. Ghost Students are students who are no longer enrolled in a local public school, but who are still one the state’s rolling three-year-average enrollment charts. Gov. Evers Aims For Soccer Goal

WI DNR Offers Tips on Ice Safety

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is offering some tips on how to stay safe on ice that continues to melt and refreeze.  The DNR says the thickness of ice changes quickly this time of year, so it recommends carrying a cell phone, having a rope, and staying away from unfamiliar areas.  A full list of recommendations is available on the DNR’s website.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force today announced that Lucas D. Aschbrenner, age 45, was arrested in Arbor Vitae, Wis. on March 2, 2023, for one count of possession of child pornography. Mr. Aschbrenner is a fourth-grade math teacher at Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk Grade School.
