Alice In Dairyland Candidates Announced

 The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has announced the six top candidates to become the 76th Alice in Dairyland. The candidates are Ashley Hagenow, Shannon Lamb, Lydia Luebke, Jackie Rosenbush, Charitee Seebecker and Jodie Weyland. Prior to being selected, the candidates completed an application and preliminary interview. Lawmakers Block Vaccine Requirement

Wisconsin lawmakers have once again blocked a new meningitis vaccine requirement.  The legislature’s rules committee yesterday voted to suspend the vaccine rules from the state’s Department of Health Services.  Many parents were upset at the scope of the new rules, and lawmakers say DHS went too far and acted on its own.  The rules would have created a new meningitis vaccine requirement for seventh graders, and changed the rules for the chickenpox in Wisconsin. State Processing Tax Returns

We are about halfway through tax season, and Wisconsin’s taxman says they’ve processed about a third of the state’s income tax returns.  The Department of Revenue yesterday said it has handled over one-million tax returns so far this year. That includes three-thousand people who filed for free through the state’s My Tax Account portal.  Revenue says the average tax refund so far is just over 780 dollars.

Officer Injured While Responding to Crash

On March 9, 2023 at approximately 9:57 PM, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office and Menomonie Fire Department were dispatched for a vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near mile marker 33 westbound in the Township of Lucas, Dunn County. The Dunn County Communications Center received information from the Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) that a Trooper was investigating a crash at that location and was struck by a passing vehicle. Strep Throat Cases on Rise in WI

Strep throat is making its way across Wisconsin. The state’s Department of Health Services this week said there’s been an uptick in the number of cases turning-up in doctor’s offices and hospitals. As usual, most of the cases are in kids and their parents. Doctors say you should get tested if you have a fever and a sore throat, before strep becomes something worse.

Jobless Rate Continues to Drop

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate is below three percent, but the state isn’t back to pre-pandemic job levels yet. The latest report from the Department of Workforce Development puts the state’s jobless rate at two-point-nine percent. That’s down from three percent at the end of last year. The labor participation rate, however, continues to lag. DWD says 64-and-a-half percent of people in Wisconsin are working. That’s about two points lower than the labor participation rate just before the coronavirus outbreak in 2020.

Menomonie Names New City Administrator

Eric Atkinson has been named the new City Administrator for the City of Menomonie. Evers “Moooo”ves on Dairy Pride

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers doesn’t want the FDA to allow non-dairy products to be marketed as milk.  Today Evers wrote a letter to the FDA asking it to reconsider its recommendation that products like those that come from nuts and plants can be considered milk.  Evers says that decision could hurt Wisconsin dairy farmers that take time and effort to produce quality dairy products.

The National Sleep Foundation, which launched Sleep Awareness Week in 1998, says 45% of Americans report poor or insufficient sleep negatively affects their daily lives. Sunday, March 12 begins Sleep Awareness Week. It’s also the day to move clocks ahead one hour as Daylight Saving Time begins and sleep schedules may be affected.
