 As expected, Milwaukee County is raising its sales tax. County supervisors yesterday overwhelmingly voted to raise the county’s sales tax by point-four percent. That will nearly double Milwaukee County’s sales tax to just under one-percent. The county got the green light to raise the tax under the new shared revenue proposal from state lawmakers. County Executive David Crowley celebrated the tax hike, saying it will allow the county to continue to pay for parks, seniors services, and buses.

The Stillwater Lift Bridge will be closed throughout the day next Tuesday. The historic bridge spans the St. Croix River at the Wisconsin border, and the closure is to allow for crews to replace an electrical power cable. The bridge will remain in its lowered position, and small boats and watercraft will be allowed to pass underneath it. The closure will last from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Eau Claire Fire Department (ECFD) responded to a structure fire Wednesday evening in 700 block of Fall St. A Fire Medic unit (Medic 10) was first on the scene and reported smoke showing from the the windows and 1st floor of the home, one tenant was outside of the structure and was evaluated for minor injuries. It is going to be dangerously hot across the Chippewa Valley today. The National Weather Service says the advisory goes into effect at noon today, and runs til 8 p.m. tonight. Forecasters are warning of temperatures in the 90s and a heat index above 100. It took a jury about half-an-hour to find Green Bay’s chopper guilty of murdering, then dismembering her boyfriend.  The jury yesterday found Taylor Schabusiness guilty on all counts.  Her trial ended shortly after prosecutors played her taped interview with police from just after the murder in February of last year.  Schabusiness admitted to police that she strangled her boyfriend.  She called it ‘random.’  The jury is not done, however.  Jurors have to decide today if Schabusiness will spend the rest

 It was carbon monoxide that killed a Madison-area Marine. Investigators in North Carolina yesterday said a carbon monoxide leak killed Lance Corporal Tanner Kaltenberg and two other Marines. They were found dead in a car off-base on Sunday. No one is saying just where the carbon monoxide came from, or why the three didn’t escape. Kaltenberg was a graduate of Verona High School and had been on active duty since May 2021.

A judge says the 11-year-old Milwaukee boy accused of killing his mom over a virtual reality headset is competent enough to stand trial.  The judge made the ruling despite a split opinion from the two psychologists who interviewed the boy.  Milwaukee Police say the boy was 10 years old when took his mother’s gun and shot her in the head last fall after she refused to buy him a VR headset.  Family members say the boy then ordered the headset

 A missing Brewer fan has been found. Milwaukee Police issued an alert for 53-year-old Schawn Pfeifer yesterday. Officers say he went missing about 2 p.m. at American Family Field when he became separated from his group. Milwaukee Police said last night that Pfeifer had been found. No one is saying where he went, where he was found, or if alcohol played a role in his disappearance.
