We are waiting for more answers about a public embezzlement case in Vernon County. Viroqua Police last week arrested 30-year-old Kayla Fortney on charges that she stole from the county. Fortney was an administrative assistant at the county. Investigators say she took more than 10 thousand-dollars, though it’s not clear how. Fortney was in court on Friday and released on a signature bond.

We now know who died in the two crashes at EAA in Oshkosh over the weekend.  Authorities yesterday identified the victims of Saturday morning’s crash as Devyn Collie Reilly and Zach Colliemoreno.  They died when their plane went into Lake Winnebago.  Mark Peterson and Thomas Volz died about three hours later when their copters collided.  Both the FAA and the NTSB, along with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the crashes.

There will be plenty of opportunities for National Night Out tonight in the Chippewa Valley. The police departments in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Altoona, Menomonie, and a half dozen other communities are all planning to spend part of tonight out in their communities. National Night Out is a yearly chance for neighbors to meet each other, and for police to do some community outreach. Most events run from about 5:30 til 8 p.m. tonight.

A judge in Waukesha says Wisconsin’s guidance for how to handle military ballots is lacking, but he also said a lawsuit against the state’s election commission over military ballots cannot stand. Judge Michael Maxwell on Friday dismissed the lawsuit from state Rep. Janel Brandtjen over three military ballots mailed to her house. The judge says Brandtjen should have sued Milwaukee’s election office, and not the Wisconsin Elections Commission. There could be some movement in the Leinenkugel’s strike today. Some of the striking workers at Leinie’s Chippewa Falls brewery are set to sit down with company leaders today. Over 40 workers at the plant have been on strike for the past three weeks. The union for the workers wants more money and other concessions. The company says it’s made a generous offer. This is the first strike at Leinie’s since the 1980s.

There are literally millions more fish in Lake Michigan thanks to the state of Wisconsin. The Department of Natural Resources yesterday released the tally from its 2023 fish stocking. Wisconsin added over two-and-a-half million fish to the lake this year. That includes over a million Chinook salmon, and a half-million rainbow trout. Wisconsin also added over 370 thousand fish to Lake Superior. Most of those were brown trout and walleye.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are opening their new restaurant in Milwaukee today. The two KISS frontmen are the owners of Rock & Brews, a restaurant inspired by rock music. The new restaurant is opening at the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino. There’s a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. this morning, and the first customers can grab a burger starting at 3 p.m. Simmons and Stanley will be there themselves to launch the new restaurant, and are promising a ‘crazy good’

On Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 11:20 p.m., the Barron County 911 Center received a 911 call from Ben and Maggie’s Town Pump reported a male subject just brandished a firearm at the front door and made some threats. Deputies from the Barron County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area and after a short search located a male suspect matching the description.
