Investigation Continues After Deadly Train Accident

One person is dead after being hit by a train in Rusk County. It happened Saturday evening on the trestle near Capener Road in the Town of Hubbard. Rusk County Sheriff Jeffery Wallace says the victim was pinned underneath the train. Rescue crews tried to pull them out, but the person died on the scene. Hearing to Determine Next Step for Peters’ Case

A judge in western Wisconsin will begin the process to decide if the now-15-year-old boy accused of killing then assaulting a 10-year-old girl last year will be tried as an adult. There is a hearing today in Chippewa County in the case. The teen is already charged as an adult, the hearing is on a request to move the case back to juvenile court. Changes to Unemployment Benefits Vetoed by Governor Evers

Wisconsin’s governor has vetoed a handful of plans that would have limited unemployment benefits in order to get people back to work. Governor Tony Evers on Friday vetoed five pieces of legislation that would have required people on unemployment to go on job interviews, look for more work, and pass more drug tests. Gas Ban Snuffed Out by Gov. Evers

Wisconsin’s governor has vetoed Wisconsin’s proposed ban on gas-powered-stove bans. Governor Evers scuttled the legislation on Friday. The governor says the ban would have stopped local governments from making their own decisions about regulating things like gas stoves and gas-powered cars. Republican lawmakers approved the ban and bans back in the spring, they said as a way to cut-off any new local bans. The governor says Wisconsin lawmakers should not be micromanaging cities or counties in the state.

Derby Crash Injures Driver

Those who were there say the crash and fire at the Ozaukee County Fair’s demolition derby could have been worse. Cedarburg Police say a car caught fire during Saturday’s derby, and the 22-year-old driver was seriously burned on his arm. The driver’s friend says they were trying to get the car started when the fire started. It spread quickly. The young man is now in the hospital, his friends have set-up a GoFundMe to help pay his medical bills.

The Big Ten Now Has Eighteen

The Big Ten continues to get bigger. Big Ten universities on Friday voted to accept Washington and Oregon into the conference next year. The move comes after the Big Ten accepted USC and UCLA last year. Both Washington and Oregon are fleeing the Pac-12, which has all but dissolved as a conference. The decision now means the Big Ten will have 18 schools, including four on the west coast.

Barron Co. Man Arrested, 6th OWI

Justin Micheal Ausman, 43 years of age, from Barron has been arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol Spooner Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 6th offense. On Sunday, August 6, 2023, at approximately 7:45 pm a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper stopped a vehicle on County W for a speed violation and unsafe lane deviation.
