The Supreme Court’s decision to cancel President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan will impact about 700-thousand Wisconsinites.  Experts say the average loan payment amount in Wisconsin is just over 150 dollars a month so hundreds of thousands of people will have to lay out that much more each month.  Carole Trone of the Wisconsin Coalition of Student Debt said people who graduated in the past few years and those who left school during the pandemic will be facing something they haven’t seen before.

Wisconsin gas prices are pretty stable as the Fourth of July holiday weekend begins.  The state average for regular was three-42 a gallon a Friday, the same price as Thursday.  That’s a dime lower than a week ago and a dollar-24 a gallon less than on the Independence Day weekend last year.

It’s now up to Governor Evers. Republicans in the State Assembly last night approved the state’s new two-year budget. The spending plan comes with a 99 billion-dollar price tag, and increases spending on everything from roads, to schools, to health care. The budget also contains a four billion-dollar tax cut, though it’s unclear if Governor Evers will keep that tax cut or veto it out of the budget. A Dane County man is heading to prison for making threats to Governor Tony Evers and other elected leaders. A federal judge in Madison yesterday sentenced 53-year-old Michael Yaker to a year and a day in prison. Yaker pleaded guilty to making the threats on Facebook last year. The judge spent a lot of time focusing on Yaker’s mental health, and ordered him to get some counseling after he is released from prison. Yaker has a history of making threats

Triple-A yesterday said it expects one-point-one million people in the state to hit the road or catch a plane this weekend. Most people will drive though. A western Wisconsin mailman isn’t going to prison on meth charges. A judge yesterday instead sentenced 69-year-old Timothy Wilson to two years probation. The Barron County Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilson while he was making his mail rounds in February of 2020 for possession of meth. It’s not clear if he was dealing meth on his postal route, but the sheriff’s office says they found about a thousand-dollars cash on him when they arrested him. Wilson pleaded guilty to meth possession charges.

 Western Wisconsin’s air is a bit better than the rest of the state, but there’s still an air quality warning. The state’s Department of Natural Resources is keeping the warning in place til noon today. The worst air in the state is in southwestern Wisconsin. The DNR says the air in northwestern Wisconsin is unhealthy for sensitive groups. The DNR says smoke from those Canadian wildfires continues to make the air in Wisconsin unhealthy. The governor was in Eau Claire yesterday to help open the new Sojourner House expansion. Governor Tony Evers helped cut the ribbon on the four thousand square-foot addition to the shelter in Eau Claire. Hope Elliot, the shelter’s coordinator, said the new space will allow the Sojourner House to help more people in the community who don’t have a place to live. The expansion has been in the works for years.

JJ Watt has a new job. Watt yesterday announced that he is joining the team at CBS for the upcoming football season. Watt joked on Twitter that he got a job at CVS, then corrected himself to CBS. Watt will be a studio analyst, he has a multi-year deal.
