Judge Rules on WI Abortion Law, Case Likely Heads to High Court

 A Dane County judge has ruled that an 1849 Wisconsin law banning abortion, that went into effect when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, does not create a ban on abortion.  Attorney General Josh Kaul said Judge Diane Schlipper’s ruling on Friday is a “significant and positive development” in a lawsuit challenging the ban the Republican-controlled Legislature passed after Roe was overturned.  Schlipper ruled that the 1849 law creates a ban on feticide, under a 1994 Wisconsin Supreme Court case.  The

Dodgeville Celebrates Farmers

Dodgeville is celebrating farmers this weekend.  The 37th Farmers Appreciation Day begins at 5 p.m. at Harris Park.  The event will get rolling with live music and a “sip and “savor,” followed by a fireworks show at dusk.  A Farmers 5K Run/Walk starts at 8:30 a.m. at Dodgeville High School.  Farmers Appreciation Day is aimed at recognizing farmers and agribusinesses, and educating the public about the agriculture industry. UW Health Seeks Volunteers for New Alzheimer’s Drug

UW Health is recruiting volunteers for a clinical trial to test the new Alzheimer’s drug the FDA approved on Thursday.  The drug is aimed at slowing progression of the disease.  The study is open to people age 55 and older who are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s symptoms.  The trial requires a four-year commitment and includes screening visits, blood draws, cognitive testing, PET and MRI scans, and physical exams.  More information on the study is available online.

Weekly WI Gas Pump Peek

Despite the recent holiday gas prices in southern Wisconsin are over ten cents lower than they were last month.  Today the average in Madison is three dollars and 30 cents a gallon, while this time last month it was three-43 a gallon.  However, Triple-A says gas demand did go up over the holiday weekend so gas prices could follow.

Opening Statements Scheduled in Green Bay Murder Case

The woman accused of chopping-up her boyfriend in Green Bay last year after a day of drug use will get a new competency hearing, but not another delay in her trial. The judge in Taylor Schabusiness’ case yesterday approved a third mental health evaluation, but refused to move the trial. Schabusiness’ lawyers are angling for a mental health defense in the case. Case of Missing Teen Remains Open, Search Continues

It’s been nearly a month since a Sauk County 13-year-old headed into Devil’s Lake State Park and disappeared.  The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office yesterday said 13-year-old James Yoblonski continues to be listed as missing, and the search for him hasn’t ended.  Yoblonski’s dad says James might be trying to live in the woods as a survival mission.  Deputies and others spent a week straight last month searching the woods for Yoblonski, and found some evidence that he was camping.  Since

Eau Claire leaders want to try again with a smaller wheel tax.  The city council is scheduled to vote next week on a 24 dollar wheel tax that would be earmarked for roads. Gov. Evers Makes Budget Rounds

Wisconsin’s governor took a budget victory lap in western Wisconsin yesterday. Governor Evers stopped in Chippewa Falls to visit the local Boys and Girls Club. The governor said his budget will help all sorts of groups like the Boys and Girls Club. The governor signed Wisconsin’s new two-year, 99 billion-dollar state budget on Wednesday.

Chick-Fil-A has its own sauce, as does Arby’s, and now Culver’s can say the same thing. Culver’s this week debuted its new signature sauce. The company says it’s ‘creamy and tangy, with notes of buttermilk, savory Parmesan and a whisper of bleu cheese.’ Culver’s is suggesting the sauce for its chicken fingers, and its fries. Culver’s says the sauce is already available across the country, and is already very popular.
