Once Over on the Do-Over Ballots

We could get a little more clarity about do-over ballots in Wisconsin today. A judge in Waukesha is scheduled to hear a case about ballot spoiling. That’s the name for getting a second ballot after you’ve voted. The Wisconsin Elections Commission wanted to allow voters to get a second ballot if the person they voted for dropped-out of the Democratic Race for US Senate last year. Both a lower court judge and an appeals court said that’s not allowed.

It’s that time of year again. UW-Eau Claire is less than a week away from move-in and the beginning of the school year. The dorms open next Sunday, and students will move in by next Tuesday. The school is not saying just how many students will be in the dorms this year. A full university headcount won’t come until the semester is in full swing next month.

New Plan Eyes Election Night Rules

It’s not going to be enough to simply broadcast the vote count next year under a plan at the Wisconsin Capitol. The Senate Committee on Elections is eyeing a plan that would require local election clerks to keep the tape as well. The plan says if a local election clerk broadcasts or livestreams the vote count on election night, they must keep a tape of that broadcast for 22 months. Driver Arrested After Stolen Semi Chase

Authorities have released new details about a police pursuit of a stolen semi that tied up Interstate 90/94 near the Wisconsin Dells Friday afternoon. The truck had been reported stolen out of Chippewa County and the chase started in Jackson County after people on the highway reported a semi without a trailer being driven erratically. Crews Respond to Warehouse Fire

A fire causes about $10,000 in damages. On Saturday August 26th the Eau Claire Fire Department responded to 3605 White Ave for a report of a fire alarm sounding. Semi Chase Slows I-94 Traffic

Traffic slowed to a crawl on Interstate 90/94 for several hours Friday near the Wisconsin Dells.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported around 3:45 p.m. that the eastbound lanes were closed between County Highway HH in Lyndon Station and U.S. Highway 12/State Highway 16 in the Wisconsin Dells.  State Police reported later that the traffic tie-up was the result of a pursuit of a semi that tried to run from troopers.

Frist Lady Plans WI Visit

First Lady Jill Biden will be coming to Madison next week.  The White House announced on Friday that the first lady will arrive next Thursday, August 31st.  She’ll take part in a tour and listening session with Senator Tammy Baldwin as part of the Biden Cancer Moonshot.  The first lady and the senator will highlight the importance of early detection and improving access to cancer screenings.  Biden will then speak at an educator appreciation event with the National Education Association

Air Quality Prompts Jump in Emergency Room Visits

Smoke from the wildfires burning in Canada is blamed for a major jump in asthma-related trips to the emergency room in Wisconsin and a dozen other states.  The CDC says researchers found that ER visits were 17-percent higher than usual in areas where wildfire smoke enveloped the region, triggering air quality alerts between April and August.  That included Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, as well as Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.  New York
