Storms Knock Out Power in Parts of WI

We didn’t see anything too severe in our area, but that wasn’t the case across the state. Storms knocked out power to thousands of Wisconsin families Friday night.  As of 10:30 p.m., Alliant Energy reported nearly six-thousand homes and businesses were without power, including nearly 25-hundred in Green Lake County and more than 200 in Columbia and Iowa counties.  We Energies reported nearly 38-hundred outages in the Fort Atkinson area of Jefferson County and nearly a thousand Adams-Columbia Electric Co-op

Madison Sees Job Loss, WI Unemployment Rate Low

The Madison area has lost more than eight-thousand jobs over the past four years.  The Wisconsin Policy Forum attributes more than three-thousand of those job losses from 2019 through 2022 to declines in the tech sector.  Statewide, Wisconsin lost more than 52-thousand jobs compared to employment levels before the pandemic hit.  But even with the loss in jobs, the state’s unemployment rate remains near historic low of two-point-five percent.

USDA Extends Help to WI Farmers

The federal government is offering help to Wisconsin farmers being affected by some of the worst drought conditions the state has ever seen.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture says both financial and technical assistance are available.  Some of the programs include the Livestock Forage Disaster Program and Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program.  More information is available on the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service website WITH A CLICK HERE.

Former Postman Sentenced to Probation

A former mailman from Barron County will not spend any time behind bars for stealing over four-thousand-dollars worth of Menards’ rebate checks. Joshua Copas from Cumberland pleaded guilty this week to stealing the check while he was delivering mail last year. The case broke when a woman called Menards asking about her rebate check. The store told her it’d already been spent. Investigators then tracked down Copas and found that he’d stolen more than 30 other checks. In all, prosecutors

Suspicious Death Turns Homicide Investigation

The investigation into a man found dead in the parking lot of a strip club in Jackson County is now a homicide investigation. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office yesterday ruled 55-year-old Andrew Frechette’s death a homicide. He was found in a car in the parking lot of Jimmy’s InBetween in the township of Alma back on June 30th. Former Deputy Pleads Guilty

A former Rock County deputy is taking a plea deal in his child sexual assault case.  Gary Huber this week pleaded guilty to four felony charges, in exchange prosecutors are dropping six other charges.  Huber admitted exposing himself to a child under 13, as well as having a child view a sex act.  He was accused of abusing kids between the ages of 8 and 12, starting as far back as 2010.  He’ll be sentenced in October.

Man Facing Charges for Animal Cruelty

A Portage man is expected to face formal charges today for the ‘brutal and sadistic’ killing of rabbits.  Portage Police arrested the man Wednesday.  No one is saying just how the man killed the rabbits, but investigators say they found several shallow graves full of decomposing rabbit bodies.  The man is accused of adopting rabbits from local shelters, then taking them home and killing them.  He’s expected to appear before a judge later today to face charges.
