Milwaukee Sees Dip in Labor Day Violence

Milwaukee’s long holiday weekend was not an overly violent one. Milwaukee Police say six people were shot between Friday afternoon and late last night. Only one person, an unidentified man, was killed. No one was shot in the city on Sunday. Police say one person was shot in Milwaukee on Saturday, and say Friday saw three people wounded, including two in a double shooting.

School Bus Fines Could Bump Up

It could soon cost you a thousand bucks if you don’t stop for a school bus in Wisconsin. Lawmakers are looking at a plan that hikes up the fine for not stopping for stopped buses. Right now the fine ranges between 30 and 300 dollars. Lawmakers want to increase that to between three-hundred and a-thousand dollars. The new plan would also add three demerit points against anyone convicted of not stopping for the bus.

Lawmakers Look at Changing Dismissal Laws

Republican lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are looking to make it more difficult for prosecutors to dismiss certain charges. A Senate committee today will hold a hearing on the plan to require a judge’s permission before a D.A. can dismiss certain domestic violence, assault, weapons, and violence against children charges. Current Wisconsin law gives prosecutors wide discretion in deciding which cases to dismiss. The move comes after Republicans criticized Milwaukee County’s D.A. for dismissing charges in hundreds of cases.

Search Continues After UW Madison Student is Attacked

A young University of Wisconsin-Madison student is in critical condition after police say someone brutally beat her early yesterday morning. Officers found the woman just after 3:15 a.m. in the downtown area. University of Wisconsin-Madison student Mercy Salzwedel is a new resident on the same block of the attack and says she feels frightened. Fire Damages Eau Claire Home

A fire causes about $75,000 in damages. Crews responded to a 911 call from a house in the 13-hundred block of Raedel Road about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. No one was home. Firefighters say the fire was in the garage, and did about 75 thousand-dollars worth of damage to the home. Three cats who were inside were rescued and are safe. No injuries reported and the fire remains under investigation.

It was the hottest September 3rd on record in Eau Claire yesterday. Forecasters say the city hit 100 degrees, hot enough to break the old record for heat, 98 degrees, set back in 1929. WI Law Redefines Strip Search

The plan to clarify Wisconsin’s in-school strip search law is moving forward this week. There will be a hearing on the plan to make it clear that school administrators cannot strip search students. The clarification comes after a superintendent in northeast Wisconsin strip searched a handful of teenage girls while looking for a vape cartridge.
