U.S. Forest Plants Grants in WI Trees

Two areas in Wisconsin are getting part of a billion dollars in federal grant money to plant trees. The U.S. Forest Service says the grants look to expand the tree canopy, which cleans the air and filters heat in the summer. The City of Milwaukee will get 12 million dollars to plant and maintain trees in disadvantaged communities. Dane County is getting one-and-a-half million. The Dane County grant also includes a proposal for creating a youth tree crew.

Charges Filed in Family Shooting

There are charges for a Burnett County teen accused of shooting and killing his step-brother. The D.A. yesterday filed reckless homicide charges against Ashton Heier of Siren. Investigators say he shot his step brother in the chest earlier this month. Heier says he fired in self defense after his step-brother came after him with a baseball bat. A judge ordered Heier held on 50-thousand dollars cash bond. He’s due back in court next month.

Teen Charged in Bonfire Explosion

Prosecutors are moving ahead with the case against the 18-year-old charged with causing the explosion at last October’s bonfire in Shawano County. A judge yesterday entered a not guilty plea for Samuel Armstrong. He’s facing 13 felony counts of injury by negligent handling of explosives or fire charges. Investigators say Armstrong seriously hurt several people when threw a partially filled 55-gallon plastic drum of fuel into a bonfire. The drum exploded. Deadly Polk Co. Crash

Two people are dead and three others are recovering after a crash in Polk County. The State Patrol says the crash happened yesterday afternoon on Highway 8, near Turtle Lake. Troopers say three cars were involved. The dead are identified as a 92-year-old woman from Texas, Leora McLean, and a 66-year-old man from Deer Park, Lynn Kelly. Troopers say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Eau Claire Seeks Subs

Eau Claire Schools are once again looking for subs. The school district yesterday said it has a shortage of substitute teachers. This is nothing new, Eau Claire Schools have had the same shortage for years. Last year the district gave subs a raise, up to 160 dollars per-day to fill-in. Still, the district says there are not enough subs to cover all of their empty classrooms.
