Planned Parenthood is offering abortions in Wisconsin once again. The group yesterday announced that it will resume abortion services in Milwaukee and Madison on Monday. Planned Parenthood’s president says Wisconsin’s 1849, pre-Roe abortion law is unenforceable. Planned Parenthood stopped offering abortions in Wisconsin last summer after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe. Wisconsin’s 1849 law bans nearly all abortions in the state. Senate Vote Cast, WEC Administrator Stands Firm

A judge will decide if Wisconsin’s elections administrator gets to keep her job. The State Senate yesterday voted to remove Meagan Wolfe from the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Every Republican voted to fire her, while every Democrat voted against it. Republicans say Wolfe needs to go because of how she handled the 2020 election, and because she refused to speak to senators about her job performance. UW Campus Enrollment Up, UWEC Down

There are a few hundred more students on the University of Wisconsin’s campuses, but most schools are either flat or lost kids. The university released its Fall 2023 enrollment numbers yesterday. Overall, the UW says enrollment jumped by 540 students, or point-three percent. This fall is the first time since 2014 that enrollment has increased. But those increases came only in Madison, Green Bay, Platteville, Stevens Point, and Whitewater. The other nine campuses all lost students. Right now eight of

EC Transit Project Rolls Into 2025

Eau Claire says its new transit hub won’t be complete for a few more years. The city yesterday said the new home for the city’s buses won’t be complete til 2025. The hub has been in the works since 2021. The first phase of the hub’s construction is expected to wrap-up next month, but it will take more time to build the apartments that Eau Claire wants to be a part of the project.

Survey Says…

Eau Claire County is asking jail inmates how they’d like to see the county’s opioid settlement money spent. The county’s Opioid Settlement Task met with inmates yesterday to get a sense of the need in the community. The county is getting two-and-a-half million-dollars from the state’s share of the opioid settlement, but has not yet decided how to spend it. New Mascot Coming Soon…

We’re waiting to see what the new mascot will be at CVTC. The school yesterday said it will unveil its new mascot at a ceremony that will also introduce the college’s new president. It will either be a river otter, or a tiger. CVTC used to be known as the Tech Tigers when the school had some sports teams back in the 70s and 80s.

Tax Talk Continues at Capitol

The Wisconsin Senate is looking to cut taxes, once again. Republicans in the Senate yesterday overrode Governor Tony Evers’ vetoes that cut a three-and-a-half billion-dollar tax cut out of the new state budget. Republicans also voted to scuttle the governor’s veto that orders a 400-year school funding increase. The override votes don’t really matter though. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is giving out tree stand safety reminders ahead of hunting season. Archery and crossbow hunting season opens across the state on Saturday. Services to Resume

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin will offer abortion services again next week. The organization stopped the service after Roe v. Wade was overturned last summer. Planned Parenthood says the ban isn’t enforceable, and abortion services will resume at the Water Street Health Center in Milwaukee and Madison East Health Center starting Monday. Patients can start scheduling appointments today.

UW Schools See Bump In Students

Enrollment in the University of Wisconsin System is up from last year–the first growth since 2014. This fall, more than 50-thousand students are going to classes at UW-Madison–a nearly 700 student increase from last fall. It’s despite a nearly 8-percent drop in first-year students in Madison. Excluding UW Madison, freshman enrollment across the system grew by 3 percent.
