The open enrollment period for individual health insurance in Wisconsin is starting today.  Governor Tony Evers is reminding state residents to look into their options for existing and new plans before January 15th.  Evers says enrollment has gone up over the last several years, but, many are still uninsured because of limited options, eligibility issues, and other coverage barriers.  The governor adds that he plans to continue pushing for BadgerCare expansion and taking steps to grow Wisconsin’s health care workforce.

Manufacturer Lucas Milhaupt, Inc. is set to open a new plant in the city later this month. A processor and fabricator of metal alloys, the 10-million dollar plant is designed for streamlined production and advancement of new product development. The grand opening of the new facility in the 48-hundred block of Pennsylvania Avenue is set for November 7th. The firm has offered the former facility, one mile south of the new plant, for sale.

Sauk County is working on a large-scale expansion to the Great Sauk State Trail.  A proposed plan would see the path running another 28 miles to the northwest to link with the 400 State Trail near Reedsburg.  An architecture and design company is working with county leaders, state  departments, and the Ho-Chunk Nation during the layout process.  Sauk County officials say they hope to have an official project draft ready to present to the public this coming spring.

An effort to show appreciation for those who have served the nation is coming up next week.  Operation Green Light For Veterans runs from November sixth through 12th.  Dane County Board officials are encouraging residents and business owners to light up their properties in green to signify support for military members.  The effort is happening in conjunction with Veteran’s Day on November eleventh.

The Wisconsin Pork Association is launching their “Give-A-Ham” campaign today.  The effort to help feed those in need is happening through the end of the month.  State residents are encouraged to buy a ham or other pork item, donate it to a local food pantry, and post a photo of the donation on social media using the hashtag “Give-A-Ham”.  Pork association leaders say the campaign adds to food security and supports Wisconsin farmers.

The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire will use 600-thousand-dollars in federal grants for brain injury advocacy. The school says it hopes to use the money to research brain injuries, as well as increasing awareness and accessibility for people in under-served communities with brain injuries. One program using the funds will be a support group summit in mid-November at the university.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is suing Wisconsin Republicans for not including University of Wisconsin employees in their pay raises. He says it’s a violation of the state constitution because they are obstructing the basic functions of government. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul says in the suit filed in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court that Republicans are interfering with the governor’s executive powers by blocking the pay raises. The New Richmond woman accused of stabbing her fiance to death in August of last year will not be going to trial. Marian Kathryn Smith yesterday pleaded guilty to reckless homicide charges. Prosecutors originally charged her with first degree homicide. Smith told police that she and her fiance were arguing over a knife, when he grabbed at her, and the knife plunged into his gut. Her plea will mean less time behind bars. She’s to be sentenced in February.
