UWRF Plans Fall Commencement

More than 300 students will receive their degrees from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls during the fall commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. at Knowles Field House in the Falcon Center, 185 Emogene Nelson Ave. A total of 305 students are set to graduate; 272 will receive bachelor’s degrees and 33 will receive master’s degrees.  Student graduates have not only invested time and money into obtaining their degrees, but they have often had to persevere through various challenges, said

Layoffs Announced

There are layoffs coming at Xcel Energy in Wisconsin. The company this week filed a notice with the state that it is eliminating 28 customer service jobs, all of them in Eau Claire. Xcel is not saying where the jobs are going, but the company said it is ‘making changes to operate more effectively and efficiently.’ Most of the layoffs will start February 1st, but some folks will stay on the job til March.

Eau Claire Police are warning about traffic issues in the Oakwood mall area when the city’s new Chick-fil-A opens later today. The city yesterday issued a traffic advisory for the area around the mall. Police are telling drivers to expect backups around Golf Road near the Oakwood Mall, Walmart, and Target. Milwaukee’s pro soccer team says it won’t take the field til at least 2026. Managers with Milwaukee Pro Soccer announced yesterday that it is delaying its opening by at least a year. Catalytic Converter Theft Could Be Felony

It could soon be a felony to steal a catalytic converter in Wisconsin. An Assembly panel will hold a hearing today on a plan to add catalytic converters to the list of ‘major car parts’ that trigger felony charges. Currently that list includes engines, transmissions, doors, the car’s hood, grille, bumper, front fenders, and a number of others. Lawmakers say the felony charges are needed because of the spike in catalytic converter thefts.

WI Congressman Warns of Chinese Spies

One Wisconsin congressman is warning about possible Chinese spying at the nation’s ports. Congressman Mike Gallagher, who leads the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, yesterday said his committee is looking into whether the Chinese are using giant port cranes to spy. Gallagher said the Department of Homeland Security is looking into possible vulnerabilities at the nation’s seaports, including whether the CCP is monitoring our activity.
