It took about an hour for Milwaukee to see its first shooting of the new year. Milwaukee Police say a 22-year-old was wounded in a shooting about 1a.m yesterday. It was the first of three shootings on New Year’s Day in the city. The other two happened at 2:45a.m, and just before 10 p.m. All three people who were shot are expected to live.

Three people are dead after police say they sped away from a traffic stop in Monona. It happened about 9 o’clock last night. State investigators say officers tried to stop the driver near Nichols Road and Monona Drive, but he sped away. After a chase into Cottage Grove, officers used spike strips to try to stop the car. That’s when police say the car crashed. All three people inside died. No officers were hurt. No one is saying who the

2023 will go down as the eighth warmest year on record in Eau Claire. Forecasters say the city saw its first 100 degree day since 2011, and saw a feels-like temperature of 110 last year. Eau Claire’s coldest day was last January 31st, when the thermometer fell to 19 below. Forecasters also say it was a dry year for Eau Claire. 2023 appears to be the 54th driest year on record.

More eyes will be on Wisconsin’s electoral process today. The state’s Presidential Preference Selection Committee will meet later this morning in Madison. The Committee is supposed to set the ballot for the April primary. The meeting comes just days after the Wisconsin Elections Commission dismissed a 14th Amendment challenge against former President Donald Trump. That challenge, however, is headed for the courts. It’s not clear just what impact that future court case could have on the Selection Committee’s decisions today.

Lottery managers say someone bought a ticket at the Food Castle grocery store in Grand Blanc, Michigan for yesterday’s drawing, and hit the winning numbers. The New Year’s Day jackpot was worth 842 million-dollars. That comes to a lump-sum payment of 425 million, before taxes.

The sheriff in Monroe County says a suspect was drunk when he led deputies on a three mile chase that topped 100 miles-per-hour. Deputies arrested 39-year-old Steven Pierce of Tomah Friday night. The sheriff’s office says the whole thing started with a traffic stop near Tomah, but they say Pierce sped away. Court records show this is Pierces’ fourth OWI arrest.
