Target Checking Out of Check Writing

Target will soon stop accepting personal checks as payment. The retail giant says the policy takes effect starting July 15th and noted stores will still accept cash and digital wallet payments along with debit and credit cards. Target said the decision was due to “extremely low volumes” of checks being written, adding that it remains committed to creating an easy and convenient checkout experience.

CVTC Budget Approved, Expenditures Down

The Chippewa Valley Technical College District Board approved the 2024-25 budget as proposed during its meeting recetly. The budget calls for total expenditures of $115,403,675, a reduction of 2.63 percent from the 2023-24 revised budget due mainly to less planned capital project expenses. General fund revenues are projected to be $63,882,544, up 1.26 percent from 2023-24. WI DOC Hearing Planned

There will likely be a lot of pointed questions about crimes, cover-ups, deaths, and the conditions inside Wisconsin’s prisons this week. The Assembly Committee on Corrections has a hearing scheduled for tomorrow to press Department of Corrections leaders. The hearings come after nine people, including the former warden at the prison in Waupun were arrested for two inmates’ deaths. Lawmakers are also expected to ask about the attack at Lincoln Hills that left a DOC teacher dead.

Restrictions Begin Ahead of RNC

Some parking and driving restrictions for the Republican National Convention will start today (Mon). The convention starts next Monday. The Secret Service will be locking down part of downtown around the Fiserv Forum. Cars traveling within about a block radius of the center could have to go through a screening process. No parking will be allowed on some streets starting just before midnight tonight (Mon) until Sunday, July 21.

Clean Up Begins in Waupaca Co.

The danger appears to be over in Waupaca County where the Manawa Millpond Dam looked like it was going to fail. The city’s fire chief yesterday said the dam at the millpond is holding. Storms dumped five inches of rain on Manawa on Friday, and the city evacuated about 100 people who lived near the dam. Now, Chief Josh Smith says they are focusing on cleaning-up. Deadly Crash Blamed On Drunk Valet Driver

Police in Milwaukee are blaming the deadly wreck on Marquette’s campus on a drunk valet driver in a borrowed car. Prosecutors filed formal homicide charges yesterday against 23-year-old Marco Gomez. Police say he was working as a valet at a Milwaukee hotel when he took a guest’s Toyota, then crashed it into another car on the Marquette campus, and killed the driver. Investigators say Gomez was drunk at the time. He’s being held on 100 thousand-dollars bond.

MKE Sees Violent Holiday Weekend

It was a violent weekend in Milwaukee with 21 people shot, three of them died. Police in the city say at least five people were shot on the Fourth of July, Saturday the sixth, and Sunday. Four people were shot on Friday the 5th. Those 21 shootings include a double shooting on Friday, a quadruple shooting on Saturday, and a shooting that wounded a 12-year-old yesterday. The deadly shootings came on the Fourth of July and Sunday.

Narcan Vending Numbers are In

People took nearly 900 boxes of Narcan out of Eau Claire’s Narcan vending machine in the past year. The City-County Health Department says that’s saved lives. The county installed the vending machine last year, and it has been busy since. The health department says in addition to the 892 boxes of Narcan, people took 517 fentanyl test kits from the vending machine. UW-Eau Claire is once again on Money magazine’s list of best colleges. The magazine last week gave the Eau Claire campus three-and-a-half out of five stars.
