Higher Numbers for UW Higher Education

For the third time in as many years, combined enrollment is up at the campuses of the Universities of Wisconsin System.  UW has released official 10th-day enrollment numbers that show the number of students enrolled this fall across the system is more than last fall.  In Western Wisconsin, that total includes nearly 95-hundred students at UW-Eau Claire, just over ten-thousand five-hundred at UW-La Crosse and just over seven-thousand at UW-Stout.

Oh, Deer!

Staff members at a Holmen wine bar on Wednesday found themselves dealing with a wild visitor.  Surveillance video shows the moments when a deer dashed across the street and through a window at the Lush Wine Bistro.  The deer jumped behind the bar where it remained for a few seconds before running back out front and eventually exiting the business.  No one was hurt.

Sparta Sees Health Care Expansion

The Mayo Clinic Health System continues to grow in Wisconsin.  Leaders gathered this week in Sparta for a groundbreaking ceremony for an expansion project at the Mayo Clinic’s Sparta Hospital.  The effort will result in the addition of ten new patient rooms and the need for additional staffing.  Work on the development is planned for completion in the spring of 2027.

Boys and Girls Clubs Seek Public Help, Support

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley is asking for increased support from the public.  The organization says a decrease in funding from the government is leaving them in a bind when it comes to funding key programs and services.  The Boys and Girls Clubs serve youth and teens from second-grade to age 18 — aiming to provide equitable opportunity and quality programs focused on academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. CLICK HERE FOR MORE

Man Ordered to Pay Restitution

The man sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sade Robinson is now legally required to pay over 92-thousand-dollars in restitution.  This follows a June jury conviction finding Maxwell Anderson guilty of first-degree intentional homicide.  The order directs just under 38-thousand-dollars of the restitution to the Crime Victim Compensation Fund.  Anderson will also pay roughly 55-thousand-dollars to Robinson’s immediate family.

Drug Take Back Day Planned

State authorities are encouraging residents to participate in this year’s Drug Take Back Day.  The event is set for Saturday at over 145 locations statewide.  The initiative is led by the state Department of Justice and Attorney General Josh Kaul.  It provides a safe and eco-friendly way to dispose of unused and expired medications.  Participants may bring prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, pet meds, and vape pens without batteries.  Illegal drugs, needles, and hazardous waste are not accepted.

Charges Filed in Deadly Taylor Co. Crash

Charges are being filed against the driver involved this week in a deadly Taylor County vehicle crash.  The accident happened at around 2 a.m. Monday on County Road C in the Town of Rib Lake.  Sheriff’s deputies say that 49-year-old Stephan Kaplon was driving while intoxicated when his SUV overturned.  A female passenger suffered fatal injuries.  Kaplon is being held on charges that include homicide by intoxicated use of the vehicle.

Inmate Death Under Investigation

Authorities are reporting the death of an inmate at the Stanley Correctional Institution.  Forty-six-year-old Shawn Bauer died last Thursday.  There has been no word on his cause of death.

Eau Claire Police are sharing videos from the night this summer when former Green Bay Packers quarterback Donald Majkowski was involved in an incident at a local bar.  According to reports — on August 29th — Majkowski got into a fight with a fellow customer and choked a bartender at Brother’s Bar on Water Street.  The videos shows the former football star telling police the customer was jealous of him because his girlfriend wanted to meet him.  Majkowski was cited

Gov. Evers Talks SNAP Benefits, Shutdown

More than 700-thousand state residents are facing the threat of losing their food benefits amid the government shutdown.  Governor Evers says the state’s federally-funded FoodShare program is set to run out of funds by the end of the month.  Evers is calling on federal leaders to end the shutdown quickly to prevent hunger and ensure access to essential food assistance.  The federal government has instructed states to delay SNAP payments, which will affect the state’s recipients.  WIC benefits for women
