BART STARR REMEMBERED IN ALBAMA

Bart Starr will be remembered at a public service in his home state of Alabama this weekend.  The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame says fans will have a chance to say goodbye to the Packer legend Sunday at Samford University near Birmingham.  There will also be a private funeral this weekend as well.   Starr’s family has said they would like to have a public memorial in Green Bay as well.

WEST ALLIS GRAD WALKS AT 89 YEARS OLD

One of the members of West Allis Central High School’s Class of 2019 is old enough to be his classmates’ great-grandfather.  Ron Ziolecki picked up his diploma this week, at age 89.  He dropped out of high school to fight in the Korean War and never had a chance to go back.  Ziolecki told his new high school buddies that it’s never too late, and that education is the most important thing in the world.

“DO-NOT” MISS THE CHANCE TO CELEBRATE

Today is National Donut Day.  It’s celebrated each year on the first Friday of June.  The Salvation Army in Chicago created the day back in 1938 to honor the women who gave soldiers in France donuts during World War I.  Several locations around the country are giving away free donuts today, including Krispy Kreme, Walmart and Hardee’s.  Other locations are offering a discount or a free donut with a purchase, like Dunkin’ Donuts, Voodoo Donuts and Cumberland Farms.

FIRE DESTROYS A LOCAL BAR AND GRILL

An early morning fire destroyed a bar in Gilmanton. It was just before 6:30 Thursday morning when a call came in from LEEBO’s Bar and grill on Highway 88 in downtown Gilmanton with reports of smoke coming from the building. There were several apartments in the building as well and all people were able to get out before the Mondovi fire department arrived on scene. STICKING AT SUMMER JOB…ON A STICK!

If you’ve ever wanted to work among the corn dogs and concerts, here’s your chance.  The Wisconsin State Fair is hosting a job fair this Saturday.  Fair managers say they need everyone from ticket takers to folks who can work in livestock barns.  You’ll need to be able to work all 11 days of the fair, and of course you’ll need to be able to work at the fairgrounds in West Allis.  You can find more information at the Wisconsin State Fair’s Website.

BALDWIN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST CLOSING OF BLACKWELL

Senator Tammy Baldwin wants answers regarding the planned closure of the Blackwell Job Corps Center in Forrest County.  Baldwin today said Blackwell is critically important to the Northwoods community.   Blackwell is a Civilian Conservation Center working with the U.S. Forest Service to maintain the health of Wisconsin’s forests.  Baldwin is calling on the Trump Administration to stop the decision to close the facility.

EAU CLAIRE MAN FACING PRISON ON CHILD ABUSE CHARGES

An Eau Claire man is in custody after being accused of child abuse.  A criminal complaint claims Eric Heisler gave a three-year-old bruises under his eyes and on his back, hands, elbows, and backside and a cut on his forehead.  The child also reportedly told doctors Heisler hit him in the forehead.  He’s facing up to six years in prison.

CHIPPEWA VALLEY GEARS UP TO RE-BRAND BIKE TRAILS

A plan is in the works to make bike trails in the Chippewa Valley More accessible.  The West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission is working with city governments in the area to re-brand the Valley’s 20 bike trails as one big system.  The commission’s senior planner says they plan to install signs along the designated routes by the end of 2020.

MAKING HISTORY

Chippewa Valley residents have the opportunity to decide what will represent the area in a new state historical museum.  Reports say the Wisconsin Historical Society was in Eau Claire yesterday talking to residents about what parts of the area deserve to be included in the museum.  The society will be making multiple other trips around the state to get ideas.  They hope to have the museum open by 2024.

A new report says Eau Claire is one of the best cities in the country for making the most money while working the least.  According to a study by Reward-Expert using date from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Eau Claire is the fifth-best city in America for work.  The city has the fourth-shortest workweek and an above-average annual salary.
