EVERS TALKS UW TUITION RATES

Governor Tony Evers’ new budget proposal may reduce tuition for non-U.S. residents.  Evers budget would allow people in the country illegally to have access to in-state tuition rates as long as they meet the same requirements as citizens.  There are currently 16 states that allow illegal immigrants access to in-state tuition rates.

CHILD STILL MISSING; FATHER ARRESTED

Milwaukee police are entering their fifth day of searching for a missing little girl.  Police yesterday said they think two-year-old Noelani Robinson may be staying with a relative out of state.  Police arrested her father, Dariaz Higgins, Wednesday afternoon, but say she was not with him.  Higgins is charged with killing the little girl’s mother, then kidnapping her.

DEADLY SUV/SEMI CRASH

A crash in Dunn County is being blamed for a man’s death and we now know names of those involved in that accident. The crash at U.S. Highway 12 and County Highway B happened yesterday afternoon.  An SUV was hit by a semi and the SUV driver later died at the hospital. The driver of the SUV, killed in the crash, was identified as Kenneth R. Candelaria, 58 of Menomonie. The driver of the semi was identified as Peter L.

EC WOMAN FACES LIFE IN PRISON

A 40-year-old Eau Claire woman could go to prison for the rest of her life if she’s convicted of multiple drug and weapons charges against her.  Sylvia Erickson is accused of distributing meth between November 2018 and January.  Authorities also say she had a handgun back in November despite being a felon.

The Eau Claire school board election is just weeks away and candidates are sharing their views on various issues.  Aaron Harder, Eric Torres, Tim Nordin, and Erica Zerr debated the issues last night including the budget and what to do about Roosevelt Elementary.  Three seats are up for grabs when voters go to the polls on April 2nd.

The discussion about Medicaid expansion in Wisconsin continues.  That brought Department of Health Services secretary-designee Andrea Palm to Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire yesterday.  Palm got a tour in addition to discussing Medicaid expansion, which is a priority for Governor Tony Evers.

6th OWI LEADS TO MORE JAIL TIME

Another drunken driving conviction is the reason why a man is going to spend more time behind bars.  If you were paging through the Leader Telegram then you likely saw the reports of Robert Kvapil from Eleva, he was sentenced to six months in jail.  This was his sixth time since 1992 that Kvapil had been convicted of an OWI-related crime.  His latest arrest happened on July 3rd.

CINDER CITY HEATS UP FOR NEW ATHLETIC COMPLEX

The School District of Altoona can officially get to work on its new Athletic Complex project.  The district said yesterday Prevea Health has contributed 75-thousand-dollars toward the project.  Fundraising efforts have been going on for two years.  The district had to rely on people and groups from the outside for donations of one-million-dollars.

BALDWIN RE-INTRODUCES DAIRY PRIDE ACT

Senator Tammy Baldwin is re-introducing bipartisan legislation design to help American dairy farmers.  The Dairy Pride Act would require non-dairy products made from nuts, seeds and plants to no longer be mislabeled with dairy terms such as milk, yogurt or cheese.  The FDA defines dairy products as being from dairy animals.  Baldwin says imitation products have gotten away with using dairy’s good name for their own benefit.

PACKERS SIGN FREE AGENTS

There are a few new Green Bay Packers as the team announced the signing of free agents. Outside linebackers Preston Smith and Za’darius Smith, along with safety Adrian Amos, were signed to boost the defense.  On the other side of the ball, the team came to terms with Billy Turner who has spent his five-year career playing offensive guard and tackle for Miami, Baltimore and Denver.
