FAIRCHILD FULLY AGAINST HALFWAY HOUSE

Leaders in Eau Claire County are at a loss for words over a proposed halfway house for sex offenders near the Town of Fairchild.  Folks from Fairchild turned out last night to once again say they don’t want the county to use some county-owned land to build a facility for violent offenders.  But the county’s lawyer, Rick Eaton says the county has to meet its ‘statutory burden.’  County board members insist that they have not made any decisions yet.

MORE DAM MONEY NEEDED

No one at city hall in Chippewa Falls is saying where they will get the extra 40 thousand-dollars it’s going to cost to fix the Glen Loch Dam.   City engineer Rick Rubenzer last night said the project is expected to cost almost 170 thousand-dollars.  Chippewa Falls has a state grant that will cover 92 thousand-dollars of that.  He said the city is on the hook for the rest.  But, Rubenzer, said the work has to be done.  He doesn’t think

BREWERS CRACK OPEN ANOTHER LATE WIN

The Brewers are just six games into the new season but are starting to show a pattern.  Milwaukee used an Orlando Arcia home run in the sixth inning last night to scratch out a 4-3 win against the Reds in Cincinnati.  It’s the latest late-game, close game win for the Brewers.  Milwaukee is 5-1 to start the season.

HARLEY REVS UP NEGOTIATIONS

Union workers at Harley Davidson are turning down the latest contract offer from the company.  The Milwaukee Business Journal reports that workers want more guarantees when it comes to benefits and health insurance.  Harley Davidson managers say they’re disappointed by the vote.  Talks will continue.  No one expects a strike.

Today is spring election day in Wisconsin.  One of the key battles is in Madison, where voters will cast ballots for mayor.  Former Mayor Paul Soglin is facing Satya Rhodes-Conway in what could be a close race.  Green Bay voters will also elect a new mayor. SEN. BALDWIN TALKS PAYCHECK FAIRNESS ACT

Senator Tammy Baldwin says it’s time for the U.S. Senate to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.  The bill has been passed by the House.  It’s designed to level the playing field between men and women with equal pay for equal work.  Baldwin says currently in Wisconsin women earn 80-cents to the dollar that men make for the same job.

MAN CONVICTED OF TRAFFICKING A CHILD

An Eau Claire man is going to prison for 25 years after being convicted of trafficking a child.  Arthur Simmons Junior received his sentence yesterday.  Simmons was believed to be connected to a case against Michelle Mayer who was accused of allowing men to sexually assault children at her home but her case was dropped.  Simmons denied having involvement in the case.

SINK HOLE INJURES WOMAN

A woman is injured after driving into a sinkhole in Trempealeau County.  The sheriff’s office says Robine Beck crashed on Arneson Road in the Township of Preston last week, injuring her leg, neck, and back.  The sinkhole was about 20 feet long, ten feet wide, and eight feet deep.  The sheriff’s office says failed culverts and flooding likely contributed to the collapse.

IRON MOUNTAIN TRAP ROCK CONTINUES LAY OFFS

A company in Bloomer may be laying off dozens of employees soon.  Iron Mountain Trap Rock Company recently announced it’s reducing its workforce at its Chippewa Sand facility and that over 30 employees may be affected.  Layoffs at the company originally started last October and were only supposed to last about six months but that time frame has expanded for an unknown reason.

FLOODING CLOSES LA CROSSE PARKS

Multiple parks in La Crosse are closed or are closing because of flooding.  The city says Riverside Park is closed and Pettibone Park, Copeland Park, the Veterans Freedom Park Boat Landing, and multiple trails will be closed soon because of rising flood waters.  The city hasn’t given any timetable as to when the parks will re-open.
