BLACKHAWKS COULD GREEN LIGHT NEW HIGH SCHOOL

The Bloomer School District is considering a referendum to build a new high school.  You might have seen this story in The Chippewa Herald. EC SCHOOL BOARD PUSHING BOUNDARIES

The school map in Eau Claire could soon be changing.  A special panel on school boundaries is suggesting that the full school board redraw the district’s enrollment map.  Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck says they hope to draw new school boundaries to balance-out enrollment at Eau Claire’s schools.  The full school board will decide the question in two weeks.

LOCAL FIREFIGHTER HONORED

A fallen Durand firefighter is being remembered as dedicated to both his family and his community.  Dozens of people turned out yesterday for a final goodbye to Firefighter Kyle Hayden.  He died last week of a heart attack, shortly before he rolled his car along Highway 85.  Hayden’s family says it was wonderful to see the community turn out to honor one of their own.

PROBATION, NOT JAIL TIME FOR ABUSE CASE

A young man who admitted to abusing a six-or-seven-year-old girl isn’t heading to jail.  Instead, a Chippewa County judge sentenced 19-year-old Alexander Kenealy to five years probation.  Prosecutors say Kenealy was about 16-years-old when he says he touched the young girl.  The judge says as long as Kenealy stays out of trouble, he’ll never serve a day behind bars.

RETIRED LACROSSE PRIEST CROSSING LINES?

A retired La Crosse priest is facing questions after police say he offered a woman cash for sex.  It happened last week outside of the library in La Crosse.  Police say Monsignor Bernard McGarty offered a woman 20 dollars, then put his hand in her lap.  McGarty told police he offered the woman the money because she’s homeless, he denied asking for sex.  This is not McGarty’s first arrest for something like this.  Police in Wausau say he exposed himself

FUTURE GOAL FOR ZERO COAL

Western Wisconsin’s power company is getting ready to close its last coal fired power plants.  Xcel Energy yesterday announced plans to close its two remaining coal plants by 2030.  Xcel filed a plan with regulators in Minnesota to close the coal plants, and expand its nuclear plant as part of a mission to be carbon neutral in the next decade or so.

BLUE RIBBON SALE

If you’ve ever walked through the Pabst Mansion and wanted to take something home, here’s your chance.  The mansion’s managers yesterday announced an estate sale planned for June 8th.  Just some of the mansion’s furnishing and decorations will be up for sale.  All of the money raised will go toward maintaining the mansion and preserving its history.

FIREFIGHTERS BAND TOGETHER

Firefighters from Madison and around the state are stepping in to help protect the Appleton community.  Fire crews are covering any calls in Appleton today while first responders and the community mourn the death of firefighter Mitch Lundgaard.  Lundgaard was shot and killed last week while on a medical call.  His funeral was today with a long procession of cars passing by friends and neighbors lining the streets to show their respect.

CALLING ALL PACKER BACKERS

The Packers are putting the call out for people who want to work at Lambeau Field.  The team is having a job fair on Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Johnsonville Tailgate Village.  Meanwhile, the team is opening their organized team activities known as OTAs tomorrow.  Three workouts over the next three weeks will be open to the public.
